​The political landscape of Akoko Edo Federal Constituency witnessed a momentous resurgence as Hon. Oladele Bankole-Balogun, popularly known as "Oteniete," officially stepped out in grand style, demonstrating unprecedented strength, vigour, and unwavering readiness to take over the mantle of leadership in the House of Representatives at the Green Chamber of the National Assembly.

​Addressing a jubilant crowd of enthusiastic supporters, party faithfuls, and community leaders who gathered in their numbers to welcome him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate expressed deep gratitude to the people of Akoko Edo.

Amid passionate cheers and energetic traditional drumming, Hon. Bankole-Balogun emphasized that despite previous doubt and political speculation, his campaign remains unshakeable and firmly focused on victory.

OTENIETE FELICITATES CHIEF OLUSEGUN OBASANJO, GCFR, ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

Otunba Oladele Bankole-Balogun, Esq., APC candidate for the House of Representatives, Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency, paid a courtesy visit to former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, at his residence as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The visit provided an opportunity for the APC candidate to felicitate with the elder statesman and to engage in meaningful political consultations on national development, democratic governance and the future of Nigeria.

Nigeria marked 66 years of independence on October 1, 2026, with the anniversary serving as a moment for reflection on the nation's journey and aspirations for a stronger and more prosperous future.

MY DEAR PEOPLE OF AKOKO-EDO,

As Nigeria celebrates another Independence Day, I extend warm greetings to all Akoko-Edo people at home and abroad.

Let us remember that Akoko-Edo is one. Our unity is greater than any party, candidate or political contest. While we may support different parties and candidates, our differences must never lead to insults, threats, falsehoods or wishes of sickness, misfortune or death.

I especially urge our young people and social media users to promote responsible debate focused on ideas, records and programmes. Our priorities must remain roads, electricity, water, education, healthcare, employment, security, agriculture and effective representation.

I acknowledge the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and support his efforts to address Nigeria’s longstanding challenges. I also reaffirm my support for the APC in Edo State under His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Executive Governor of Edo State. We must remain united and committed to the progress of Edo State and Nigeria.

For several years, I have supported our people through scholarships, assistance with employment and help for indigent members of our communities. These efforts reflect my love for Akoko-Edo and my belief that those whom God has blessed must lift others.

This election must also be about capacity, competence, integrity and service. My experience in business, law, taxation and public service, together with relationships built over several decades, can help attract opportunities and strengthen Akoko-Edo’s voice in Abuja.

I urge all candidates and supporters to compete honourably through truth, ideas, records and programmes. Democracy gives the people the right to choose; it does not permit hatred, threats or personal attacks.

As we celebrate Nigeria’s Independence, let us recommit ourselves to unity, service, excellence, tolerance and peaceful democratic engagement. When this contest ends, we will remain brothers and sisters of one Akoko-Edo. Let us pursue victory without hatred and remember that Akoko-Edo is greater than any individual ambition.

BACK TO SCHOOL: A CHILDREN’S CALL FOR BETTER EDUCATION IN AKOKO-EDO

As schools reopen across Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, children are returning to their classrooms with renewed hopes for a better learning environment and improved opportunities.

We, the children of Akoko-Edo, appreciate the importance of leaders who recognise that quality education, functional schools, adequate learning facilities, social amenities and safe communities are essential to our future.

We therefore call on all leaders and candidates seeking to represent Akoko-Edo at the federal level to make education and human development a central priority, while working constructively with the Edo State Government and relevant agencies to attract sustainable projects and improve educational infrastructure across the constituency.

*Supreme Court Ruling: How It Confronts Afagese's Candidacy Under ADC*

Mr. Paul John Afagese may be in serious legal jeopardy following the Supreme Court judgment delivered on 24 September 2026.

The Court, in appeals arising from the Youth Party, SDP and ZLP, upheld the validity of *Section 77 of the Electoral Act, 2026 (as amended)*. The operative effect is now clear:

- *Section 77(5):* A party must submit its membership register to INEC not later than 21 days before its primary. Only persons whose names are in that register may vote or be voted for at the primary.

- *Section 77(6):* A party cannot rely on a different or subsequently produced register.

- *Section 77(7):* Failure to comply means the party cannot field a candidate for that election.

This is where the problem lies for Afagese.

As of May 16, 2026, Afagese was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Records show he purchased the nomination form and participated in the APC primary for Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency, where he lost to Hon. Oladele Bankole-Balogun.

It was only after losing the APC primary that he defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This raises three distinct legal questions:

*1. Duplicity of Membership Register:* Was his name on both the APC and ADC registers at the same time? If his name was still on the APC register when the ADC submitted its own register to INEC under Section 77(5), and he had not formally resigned from the APC, his membership of the ADC is questionable.

*2. Substitution Without Due Process:* As of the material time when the ADC conducted its primary, it already had a candidate. How was that candidate replaced by Afagese? Section 84(1) and Section 77 of the Electoral Act, 2026 (as amended) require INEC to monitor all primaries, including fresh or substitution primaries. If INEC did not monitor a fresh primary, the substitution is invalid.

*3. Multiple Nomination:* Section 35 of the Electoral Act prohibits multiple nominations. Having participated as an aspirant in the APC primary and then being nominated by the ADC for the same constituency in the same electoral cycle amounts to double participation, which is prohibited under Section 84(13). If proven, his nomination is liable to be voided by the Federal High Court.

Afagese's challenge, therefore, goes beyond inexperience, inability and incompetence to navigate the complex issues of representing Akoko-Edo in the Green Chambers. It is about the legality of his nomination by the ADC while his name remained on the APC register and while he had already participated in another party's primary for the same election.

His reliance on Okpameri Nation marginalization sentiment also appears misplaced, as the Okpameri people are currently well represented in APC structures from the federal level to the local government.
