Pangolins International

Pangolins International Our new name of Pangolins International represents a new identity for a new mission.

Our mission is to help develop and facilitate solutions to pangolin conservation problems at community, national and international level, and initiate and support their scientific and practical study. We began as the Rare and Endangered Species Trust (REST) in Namibia in 2000, dedicated to the protection of species that rarely attract media attention – including pangolins. Since then, the illegal

trade in pangolins has been growing exponentially, with Nigeria now recognised as the epicentre of pangolin trafficking. Nigeria's large and busy seaports make the country the ideal hub for smuggling pangolins from Africa to Asia. To combat the increasing effects of poaching, we've narrowed our focus to pangolins and we’re in the process of relocating to Nigeria, where we can make the biggest difference. From our new HQ in the Emerald Forest Reserve, we'll be working with the estate's owners, the local community and the authorities to take in and rehabilitate rescued pangolins – supported by the Nigerian government's strong stance against poachers and illegal animal trading. We have every intention of continuing with our work to rescue any creature that needs our help, but the time is now right to focus on pangolins. We will soon be welcoming guests, students & volunteers to our center in Nigeria.

Dear supporters, I’ve been on a bit of a “personal time out” & it’s done me so much good. Fighting for animals never totally exhausted me, but fighting against people who have personal agendas opposed to best welfare wildlife practices (especially those with some power), utterly shattered me!
I now work mainly behind the scenes…doing interviews for awareness & research & I’ve started writing more books which I hope with help with pangolin awareness & funding.
My colleagues at Emerald Forest are battling on so many fronts, but they just keep pressing forward & are saving and releasing animals almost weekly.
We have a big grant proposal in to finish & equip the animal clinic so cross fingers.
Take up their suggestions…go do some artwork outside for World environmental day. CNN recently reported that studies are showing some form of art increases life expectancy!
Do it for the world, yourself & we hope to announce another art auction soon to support pangolin conservation so do it for pangolins! Lv m

Namibia has lost 28 rhino in the past 3 months due to poaching (most from Etosha our most famous wildlife park). That’s a massive animal to hide. How many much smaller pangolins MEFT? … and yet you drove an honest, hardworking Namibian org like REST to work in any country except Namibia (I can’t go through corruption like that again). We’re still waiting to hear where the millions of dollars in research pangolin scales that you illegally confiscated disappeared to.
Another tragic story of corruption. We save, officials paid to protect, kill! Heartbreaking!

Today I realized I was an ok Mum to my children…my daughter found an abandoned mouse that fell from a ceiling about 3 m high. (still not sure if it’s a reg mouse or dwarf pigmy mouse).
Oddly years ago we found an entire litter of dwarf pigmy mice that fell in REST’s clinic the same way & survived, were raised & eventually released.
What got me thinking is she’s now feeding this tiny creature every few hours (& loosing lots of sleep), not because it’s endangered & not because anyone will give her recognition, but because it’s a live little creature that needs help & she has the resources & will make the time to give it food, warmth & Love.
It’s been a bit disheartening to see some newbies involved in pangolin conservation who are doing work just to be recognized, get degrees or receive funding. In my experience those are the people that only dedicate a few years, find out it’s harder than they thought (& pays a lot less than expected), and eventually they just disappear with a published paper or 2.
I’m so proud to be the mother of a young woman who truely cares about each & every creature.
Thanks Niena bee 🐝 for reminding me of conservation sincerity!

Happy World Pangolin Day 1 day late:-)…My internet would not let me load an amazing slowmo video of one of my baby pangs preparing for release so I’m trying with just 2 cute photos of other babies to celebrate this special day.
Yesterday our partners at Green Fingers saved 2 pangolins off the black market…NOW that’s how to celebrate World Pangolin Day with action not words!
Please continue to support our vital work.

Quick update as I want to share a video next for our angel of the week.
The injured Otter is stable & recovering. This new pang came in at deaths door & after Chinedu’s hours of care & a sleepless night, he didn’t make it, but as I told the team, “we can’t always save them, but at least he died warm, fed & loved”.
If you don’t know who EES is, look him up. He’s Namibian & famous world wide for his music, but he is also a massive supporter of conservation & community empowerment. He has been supporting our pangolin work in Nigeria & finally has a pangolin named after him…see WUMA in our next video.

It’s been a great week! Chinedu & the Emerald forest team raised & released another success story pangolin. These pups are so fragile, but one at a time, the team has success after success.
I also received a fantastic package in the post. The Rebel girls latest book has just been published & pre orders are being taken. This book is so cool & I love this organization. I was honoured to be chosen as 1 of 145 women around the world to contribute to this latest endeavor & as I start to read the entire book I am honestly in awe of the amazing women I’m featured with & their stories & advice. With the support of Rebel girls, I’ll be donating a few books to local schools.
