We have been asking for safe schools from government since the Chibok Girls incidence. The promises have been made on paper yet many of our public schools remain without fences. It has been 13 days since our children were abducted. Schools are no longer safe. We are asking and pleading that our government do what they have promised on the international stage. If we want children educated, then we must protect them while they learn.

This is not a Happy Children's Day for all.
We want our children back safe.
We want their teachers back.
Our Government must do better.
It can't be business as usual.

Onelife Initiative is looking for graduates and young professionals to join our field teams in Ekiti and Akwa Ibom states.
Since 2016, Onelife Initiative (CAC/IT/No.87277) has been actively connecting young people with the information, services, and resources they need to thrive. Our Ekiti office has been operational since 2019 and our Uyo office since 2022, and the work in both states is growing.

Onelife Initiative is looking for an Islamic Studies expert or scholar 📿 who can work individually or in a team to develop sermon notes that provide Quranic and theological support for the education of married and pregnant girls in northern Nigeria.

The consultant will produce a series of Khutbah guides 📖grounded in Islamic theology, designed for use by Imams to affirm from a Quranic and Hadith perspective that education is not suspended by marriage or pregnancy. That knowledge remains an obligation. That a girl who is a wife or a mother still has a right to learn.

Our peer education model has repeatedly delivered results for girls and young women in the communities we work with. We recently trained another batch of peer educators across 4 communities in Oyo State. In the recent past, Akwa Ibom and Ekiti States have also benefited from such training model.

The other part of the story you don’t hear often is how we sometimes recruit persons who are not fit for the role, or how, after weeks of training, a fit peer educator abandons the community. Sometimes it is that we take a bet on fresh secondary school graduates, and they deliver excellent results, or how sometimes religion and moral bias prevent older peer educators from delivering effectively.

Overall, it has been a win. Our monitoring and evaluation system does not miss any of these wins and challenges. We learn very quickly and make the necessary adjustments. Did we also mention that the language of the community is our language? The slides may be in English, but the delivery is in the local language.

We continue to collaborate with state governments to deliver policies that benefit women and girls. Our ongoing partnership with the State Ministry of Health is an example of such.

Through our engagement with the relevant department and partners, we deliver human resources capacity building and services to ensure we deliver health dividends for women and girls in particular.

Our partnership with the Family Health department on the Enabling Comprehensive Care for Her Reproductive Health Options (ECHO) 2.0 is one we hold dearly.

Not everything you see online about s*x and reproductive health is true, complete or accurate… and honestly, that is a BIG problem especially for our young people.

We just wrapped up a 2-day training with social media influencers and content creators, we had the bestest🤗and most brilliant of them in the room. Most importantly, they were open minded and as passionate about the issues as we were.

From conversations about abstinence to understanding how unsafe abortion plays a big role in increasing maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria and how contraceptives are also a game changer, Dr Adewole, Mrs Alu and our Executive Director didn’t shy away from the real topics. Because the truth is, these conversations are directly linked to life long decisions for women and girls.

Our partners on the Lets talk project will be excited to hear that our social media influencers are armed with accurate information that will reach thousands of young people. More importantly, the audience these influencers will be reaching are certainly getting a better deal.

As we commemorate World Health Day today, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue providing last-mile adolescent-friendly health services in our rural, sub urban and peri urban communities. Few weeks back, with support from Ipas Nigeria, we Clocked it with 20 Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs). These are the ones we locally call Chemists!

We recognise their role in supplementing healthcare provision on our communities. We see them for the gaps that they help to close in various local governments, towns and villages. Residents acknowledge them as the first go-to point when they have health challenges. What was missing however was them being open to provide services in non-judgmental manner to adolescent girls and young people.

Together with our Consultant Obstetrician Gynecologist from the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, we queried their practices, methods and bias. We asked of their disposition to when a 17-year old undergraduate girl comes to them for contraceptive or when that Part 1 student comes to them to buy a condom. The Ministry of Health and Human Services in Ekiti State was also there to give a nod to this approach to ensuring no one is left behind.

Later today, as part of our efforts to Clock It in Iworoko, Oye and Ikere all in Ekiti, our Community Champions will be having community outreaches at LT1 Faculty of Arts Federal University Oye by 3pm, Achievers Villa Oye by 4pm, Idowu Taiwo and COE Business Administration Lecturer Room BOUESTI by 3pm.

Education is a right, not a privilege, yet for many married and pregnant girls in Northern Nigeria, the school gates are often shut prematurely.

Onelife Initiative is committed to changing this narrative with its partners. We are seeking five (5) dedicated and experienced to conduct a deep-dive assessment into the practices and opportunities for school re-entry in , , , , and states. On the Strengthening Systems and Communities to End Child Marriage (SSCE) project, our goal is to turn data into action, creating a roadmap for state-level policies and federal interventions that ensure these girls return to the classroom.
