FOUNDER of Sickle Cell Hope Alive Foundation (SCHAF), Prof Adeyinka Falusi, has decried that a large number of Nigeria’s 4 to 6 million people living with sickle cell disease are frustrated, confused, and dying from stigma.

Falusi, who spoke at the Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month by SCHAF tagged “Mothers of Warriors in Action” in Ibadan, said almost everyone in their extended family, if not in their immediate families, has someone living with sickle cell, and there is no need for any stigmatisation.

The celebration afforded 200 persons living with SCD free drugs to last them for three months, counsel on healthy living, and empowerment.

The testimony of Mr James Koredele Olalowo, a 40-year-old teacher is an encouragement to parents and persons living with sickle cell disease (SCD). His testimony is that individuals can live almost bone pain-free by avoiding triggers of bone crisis and daily consumption of pigeon peas.

“I thought I was bewitched because I fall sick often. The severe pains in the bone also left me thinking at other times that I stepped on a charm. But much later, a blood test diagnosed sickle cell disease,” said Olalowo.

THE OYO STATE COMMISSIONER FOR HEALTH, DR OLUWASERIMI AJETUNMOBI HAS REITERATED THE COMMITMENT OF GOVERNOR SEYI MAKINDE’S ADMINISTRATION IN PRIORITIZING THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE LIVING WITH THE SICKLE CELL DISEASE, NOTING THAT THE STATE GOVERNMENT UNDERSTANDS THE BURDEN OF THE DISEASE ON BOTH THE PATIENTS AND THEIR MOTHERS IN THE STATE.

SHE MADE THIS KNOWN AT THE SEPTEMBER SICKLE CELL DISEASE AWARENESS, 2024 TAGGED "MOWA: MOTHERS OF WARRIORS IN ACTION", ORGANIZED BY THE SICKLE CELL HOPE ALIVE FOUNDATION (SCHAF), HELD AT THE APEX EVENT CENTER YIDI GATE.

REPRESENTED BY DR OLUGBEMIDE ABIMBOLA, THE COMMISSIONER SAID, THIS YEAR’S EVENT WILL REFLECT ON THE RESILIENCE AND COURAGE DISPLAYED BY INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH THE DISEASE, NOTING THAT ADEQUATE EMPOWERMENT AND MEDICATIONS SUPPLY WILL BE PROVIDED FOR THEM TO SHAPE THEIR FUTURE, AS WELL AS ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION.

DR AJETUNMOBI SAID THE STATE GOVERNMENT WILL STRENGTHEN THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN ORDER TO GIVE ROOM FOR EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OF SICKLE CELL, ADDING THAT THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH WILL COLLABORATE WITH SCHAF TO EXPAND SUPPORT TO THE MOTHER OF WARRIORS.

IN HER OWN REMARKS, THE FOUNDER AND TRUSTEE OF SCHAF, PROFESSOR ADEYINKA FALUSI NOTED THAT THIS YEAR'S EVENT WAS ORGANIZED TO TRAIN AND EMPOWER SICKLE CELL ADULTS SO THAT THEY CAN STAND ON THEIR OWN.

SHE EMPHASIZED THE FRUSTRATION AND MENTAL HEALTH THESE MOTHERS AND PATIENTS FACE IN THE SOCIETY, THEREBY STRESSING THE NEED TO STOP THE STIGMATISATION OF SICKLE CELL PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. SHE HOWEVER CALLED ON GOVERNMENT TO REDUCE THE HIGH COST OF SICKLE CELL DISEASE DRUGS AND ALSO MAKE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE TO THEM.
