THE GREAT TRANSACTION BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
John19:30
‘It is done: the great transactions Done! I am the Lord’s, and he is mine;
He drew me, and I followed on; Charmed to confess the voice divine.
Happy day, happy day,
When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray,
And live rejoicing every day
Happy day, happy day
When Jesus washed my sins away!
A divine transaction took place between God and humanity, a transaction that required a great price. Jesus Christ came into the world, holy and without sin, living a spotless and perfect life. He taught the way of life for God’s people and demonstrated it perfectly. After living a flawless life, He went to the cross and gave Himself for humanity. When then work of redemption was completed, a declaration was made:“It is finished”.This means the work was fully completed, the price was fully paid, and nothing more was needed. The mission to bring humanity back to God was fulfilled. The redemption of the whole world was completed, not for one generation alone but for every generation. This finished work stands as a complete and perfect provision for all people across all ages. He was sent to accomplish the work of atonement for sins, and that work has been fully completed. This completed work establishes the great spiritual transaction between God and man, bringing humanity into the position where God desires them to stand. Through this finished work, the entire spiritual exchange between God and man has been perfected. Today, this great transaction is celebrated, believed, and embraced. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross has brought us to God and made us children of God, removing burdens and drawing us near to Him. As this great transaction is considered, its results and benefits become evident, and the good that has come through it is clearly seen.
1. THE GREAT TRANSACTION THROUGH THE GOSPEL OF THE MEDIATOR Romans1:16-17
The gospel reveals this great transaction accomplished by Christ, showing how He provided atonement for the sins of all humanity. When the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are studied, the full message of the Gospel is understood as a complete account that leads to the final and redemptive work accomplished through Christ for the sins of the wholeworld. This message reveals the ultimate spiritual transaction carried out through Jesus Christ, showing the complete work of atonement and reconciliation for all humanity. Christ stand as the Mediator for humanity, and through Him, the message of the Gospel unveils this divine transaction of salvation. This is a transaction that brings about acomplete exchange, in which redemption is secured through His sacrifice, and mankind is brought into the reality of God’s saving grace. This great transaction is the true foundation of life. It is not by commandments that one becomes a child of God, but by the redemptive act that God has accomplished. Just as the commandments in Exodus 20 did not make the people of Israel God’s people, but it was the deliverance through the blood in Exodus 12 that made them God's people, so also it is the sacrifice that brings redemption first, and then instruction follows. “And when I see the blood, I will passover you”. The commandments came later as a guide for those who were already in a relationship. In the New Testament, the teachings of Christ in Matthew chapters 5-7 clearly establish the principles of kingdom living and the way transformed lives are to believed. Anyone who carefully studies these chapters develops a deep desire to live as a child of God and to walk in obedience, so that such a person can boldly declare that the pursuit is to become a child of God through a life of obedience and godly conduct. This desire, however, is not what makes anyone a child of God, for becoming a child of God is not achieved by human effort or religious practice; it is a divine gift made possible through the redemptive work of God. The message of the gospel reveals the grace of Christ, His obedience, and His sacrifice for humanity. This is the divine transaction by which a person becomes a child of God. Through faith in Christ, a believer receives this transformation and becomes a child of God. This transformation is not based on human effort but on the grace revealed in Christ Jesus, His obedience, His sacrifice, and His resurrection life, which work together to bring salvation and new identity.Through this gospel transaction, a person is transformed and made a child of God by faith in Jesus Christ. Here is what the Gospel truly means. The Gospel is not merely reading what is written in books or publications; it is centred on the life of Jesus Christ and His work on the cross. The Gospel can be described through the word - “GOSPEL”:
The GOSPEL:
G–Grace of Christ; Galatians1:6
O–Obedience of Christ; Hebrews7:25-27
S–Sacrifice of Christ; 1Corinthians5:7
P–Propitiation of Christ; 1John2:1-2
E–Emancipation of Christ; Philippians 2:8-11
L–Life of Christ; Romans5:8-10
All these together reveal the fullness of the Gospel: grace, obedience, sacrifice, atonement, exaltation, and life. Through these, the complete work required to transform a person into a child of God has been accomplished. By receiving the grace, obedience, sacrifice, propitiation, exaltation, and life found in the Gospel, the work of transformation is made complete. The accounts written in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John reveal the life of Christ, and by believing in Him, salvation is received through what He has done.
G – Grace of Christ. The Gospel begins with Grace. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16). This grace brings the power of God into our lives and produces transformation. By believing in this divine work, one is made a child of God. “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). Salvation comes by grace through faith, and faith must be placed in the finished work accomplished on the cross of Calvary. Without grace, no effort can bring salvation; no matter how much effort is made, salvation cannot be attained without grace.
O– Obedience of Christ. The obedience that brings salvation is not human obedience, which is imperfect, but the perfect obedience of Christ, the Saviour of the world. Through His obedience, salvation is made available. “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). His obedience overcomes all human disobedience and makes it possible to become children of God, even though all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
S- Sacrifice of Christ. Salvation does not come through personal sincerity or human goodness, because the heart is sinful and human effort cannot bring salvation. Only the sacrifice of Christ brings salvation. “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us” (1Corinthians 5:7). Just as it is written, “when I see the blood, I will passover you, ”the shedding of blood becomes the foundation of salvation. In the New Covenant, it is not the blood of animals but the precious blood of Jesus Christ that brings redemption.
P - Propitiation of Christ. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 2:1–2).No one can overcomes in by personal strength alone. Promises made in human strength cannot sustain victory over sin. True deliverance from sin comes only through Christ, who stands as the advocate and the propitiation. Human efforts, physical acts, or self-imposed suffering cannot produce salvation. Only the finished work of Christ brings true redemption and access to God. Take note that no matter how much effort a person makes through human works, it is impossible to regain salvation by personal striving after turning away from God. Salvation is not based on what has been done by human effort, but on the finished work accomplished on the cross, where it was declared, “It is finished”. Through that completed work, He became the propitiation for the sins of the whole world, not for a few people alone but for all humanity, establishing a spiritual transaction before God that removes sin.
E– Exaltation of Christ. The gospel reveals that Christh as brought about this divine transaction for the redemption of mankind. Because He offered the ultimate and acceptable sacrifice before God, He became the source of salvation and was exalted by the Father. “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8). He took on human form and humbled Himself so that He could die for humanity; for if He had come only as God, He could not have died for the sins of man. Therefore, He died, rose again, and was exalted by God the Father. Now, everyone who calls upon His name and believes in Him is saved. If He had died and did not rise again, He could not have saved us. If He had remained in death like every other man, there would be no justification, no restoration, and no hope of new life. But because He rose again, He is Lord, and salvation is found in Him alone.
L - Life of Christ. No human work can ever grant eternal salvation. It is the grace of Christ, the obedience of Christ, the sacrifice of Christ, His atoning work for sin, His exaltation, and the life He gives that bring salvation. Salvation is entirely by Christ, through Christ, and in Christ. It is not that Christ does part and man completes the rest; salvation is fully accomplished by Him alone. He alone is the Saviour of mankind, and no philosophy, doctrine, or human effort can produce salvation apart from Him. Salvation is Christ-centred. It begins with Him, is established in Him, and is completed in Him. Without Christ, there is no salvation.“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died forus”(Romans 5:8). This reveals the love of God, that Christ died not only for all but personally for each individual. When this truth is believed in the heart, that He died for you, no power of darkness can hold you bound. “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life” (Romans 5:10). Through Him, there is deliverance from wrath and the experience of salvation in this present life.
2. THE GREAT TRANSFORMATION BY HIS GRACE IN MAN 1Timothy1:14-16.
This spiritual transaction leads to transformation, bringing a new life by His grace. Therefore, we are to focus on the finished work accomplished through the gospel, because through His grace, a new life is received. “And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting (1Timothy 1:14-16). To be a child of God is entirely by His grace, and to be a new man in Christ is also by the grace of God. To be empowered as a child of God and to stand as a servant of God is not by personal strength but solely because of His grace. The desire to live as a New Testament believer comes only through faith in the grace of God, and that grace, working through faith, becomes mighty and effective in our lives. When considering transformation, it matters to the life of a true believer saved by the grace of God.
i. The Great Transformation by His Will– Romans 12:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7. It is a great transforming work that takes place according to His will. If God had not purposed it in His own will, no personal determination or firm resolution could produce this transforming work of salvation. Transformation happens because it is established and carried out by God's will. Sometimes it is said that a man is transformed by strong determination or firm commitment, as seen in the life of Paul, who was greatly used and became a powerful preacher of the gospel. However, the most important truth is often missed: this great transformation happens by the will of God. Anyone who experiences the spiritual work accomplished by the Lord will also experience this transformation in life.
ii. The Gracious Transformation of Our Will - Acts 13:22; John 6:38. This transformational so involves the human will. There is a personal will and amind, and people often choose their own direction.Yet God comes and changes that will, leading it in a different direction. If the will is not transformed, God's intended purpose for life will not be fulfilled. Therefore, the grace of God works within us to transform our personal will. When coming to Christ, there may be no immediate outward change in physical appearance, but an inward transformation takes place. God works powerfully within, and that inward change is the most important. The struggles of life are not rooted in appearance, education, or surroundings, but in the condition of the inner will. When coming to Christ, the spiritual work He performs transforms the inner will. Through this process, life is changed into what it becomes like Christ. Everything is no longer done according to our personal will, but according to the will of God. This is a glorious transformation of grace; when the will becomes new, life also becomes new. “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will” (Acts13:22), and also Jesus said,“ For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me” (John6:38). When the will is transformed into alignment with the will of God, a continuous and evident transformation takes place.
iii. The Great Transformation to His Will – Psalms 40:8; Matthew 6:9-10. True transformation is not based on personal desire but on aligning with God's will. It is not about doing what one prefers, but about being transformed into the will of God. Nothing is accomplished merely by what is heard; everything is accomplished by the will of God as He carries out His transforming work. “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification”. Sanctification and transformation are the will of God.Our lives are set apart for Him, not lived apart from Him. Power comes through His will, and a life acceptable to God is formed through this transforming process. In every moment and situation, our lives are no longer governed by personal desire but by the will of God, who transforms. This transformation leads to a life shaped by Christ, where His mind and His way of thinking are formed within, and the life begins to reflect His nature continually. We must desire only what God desires, and love only what He loves. We must align our hearts with His will so that, in every situation we find ourselves, we choose to do what He would do. Become responsive to His will, and as you do so, situations around you begin to change. Do not measure your life by what you did yesterday, last month, or last year, but be completely transformed according to what God desires for you now. Let your life be shaped by His will and not by your past. This is why we are taught to pray, “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven”. God’s will must be fulfilled on earth just as it is in heaven. In heaven, there is no temptation, no evil influence, no hatred, and no one who causes harm. Therefore, the will of God is perfectly established there. Even though the world we live in is full of suffering, pain, and schemes of wickedness, the purpose of Godi is that His will, exactly as it is in heaven, should be carried out through us on earth.
This transformation is a work that God accomplishes within. It is a real and ongoing change where a person is brought into alignment with God’s will. This is what the Christian life is meant to be, a life of faith expressed through transformation. When you observe a person’s actions, you can see their will revealed in what they do.When you listen to a person’s words, you can discern their heart, because what is not accepted in the heart cannot proceed from the mouth.
3.THE GLORIOUS TRANSLATION TO GLORY OF HIS MEMBERS
1Corinthians15:51-52.
We are part of Him, joined to His body, sharing in His life. “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also”. This speaks of a glorious translation, from earth to heaven, where He Himself will receive His people. “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). There are examples of this translation.
i. The Truly Righteous for An Unprecedented Translation - Hebrews 11:5-6; 2 Kings 2:1,3,5,9,11. “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God” (Hebrews 11:5). Enoch walked with God and was taken. Elijah was also taken up, escaping death and being carried into glory. These were righteous men who experienced both a change in their bodies and a change in their location, being moved into the glorious kingdom of God. This is the reality of the life of faith: a continual transformation into God’s will and a final translation into His glory. “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”No one saw him because God had taken him; before his translation, he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Without faith it is impossible to please God, for anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.“Butwithout faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews11:6). Another example is found in Elijah. It is written that the Lord would take Elijah up into heaven by a whirlwind. “And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal” (2 Kings 2:1), “And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace”. (2 Kings 2:3). “And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head today? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace” (2 Kings 2:5). The sons of the prophets came to Elisha and asked if he knew that the Lord would take his master away from him that day, not by death, but by being taken alive into heaven. “And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee.” (2 Kings 2:9) “And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.”(2Kings2:11).As they continued speaking, chariots of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated them, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. This reveals what God will do for the Church in the last days.
ii. The Triumphant Redeemer and His Undeniable Translation–Luke 24:51-52; Acts1:9-11.
Christ has accomplished redemption and has made believers followers of Himself. “And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.” (Luke 24:51). “And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”(Acts1:9).Angels declared that the same Jesus who was taken up into heaven will come again in like manner. “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”We must therefore remain expectant, for He is coming again, and there will be a transformation and a translation into His kingdom. This truth is clearly revealed and made known to believers. The Church will be taken suddenly and gloriously into His kingdom. We need to be prepared for that moment. It is not enough to be occupied with outward religion or to delight only in religious activities. Christ is coming to take His redeemed people into His kingdom, and that moment will be glorious. Therefore, we must prepare ourselves, knowing that He is coming for a redeemed people who have received forgiveness and are destined for His kingdom. We should not remain ignorant of His coming. There must be a deep desire and readiness for that translation. Our prayers should not be focused only on temporary things, but let there be a longing for His return, knowing that He will transform believers into glory and bring them into His kingdom.
iii. The Total Redemption at Our UncommonTranslation–1Thessalonians4:14-18; Philippians 3:20-21.
“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him” (1 Thessalonians 4:14). Those who have already died in Christ are with Him and will come with Him; “For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1Thess 4: 15–17). We must be prepared, knowing that through the work accomplished on the cross, a great spiritual transaction has been completed, granting access into the kingdom of God to all who believe, for this grace is available to everyone, ''Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”.We must remain in Christ, live in His grace, and allow ourselves to be transformed continually, preparing ourselves without sin and condemnation for that day when we shall be taken into the kingdom of God. Respond personally to God, acknowledging that this great spiritual work has been done on your behalf, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, receive His salvation, and continue in a life that is pleasing to Him, knowing that His grace will sustain and transform you until the day you are translated into His eternal presence.
