PRE-MARKET PREPARATION

Tunde used his weight chart this time. His buyer didn't argue once.

Remember Tunde from week 1; the one who never weighed his birds and lost money on market day?

This cycle, he started weighing 10 birds weekly from day 14, tracking against the target chart he saved from our earlier post.

By week 4, his average sat right at 1.9kg — exactly on target.

When his buyer arrived, Tunde showed him the numbers before the bird ever touched the scale. No back-and-forth. No discount. Just a fair price for a flock that hit its mark because he tracked it the whole way, not just on market day.

Today's lesson: By week 4, your weekly weight checks should guide your selling decision. If your flock is on target, plan your sale for week 6. If it's behind, investigate now — feed quality, water access, ventilation, stocking density before it costs you at the scale. Prepare buyers early; don't wait until the morning of sale to find one.

LITTER MANAGEMENT

Adaeze noticed wet patches forming near her drinkers. She nearly ignored it.

Three weeks into her second cycle, Adaeze was feeling confident. Her birds were growing well, vaccination was on schedule, feed was consistent.

Then she noticed damp, caked litter forming in patches around her drinkers easy to miss if you're not looking down at your feet.

Wet litter is a breeding ground for coccidiosis, ammonia buildup, and foot pad lesions. All things that quietly eat into your final weight and your buyer's first impression.

She turned the litter that day, added extra wood shavings around the wet zones, and raised her drinkers slightly to reduce splashing. The problem stopped spreading within 48 hours.

Today's lesson: Check litter condition daily, especially around drinkers. Turn litter at the first sign of caking or dampness. Add fresh wood shavings on top of wet patches rather than letting them spread. Raise drinkers as birds grow to reduce splashing. Dry, friable litter should crumble in your hand not clump.

Wet litter is one of the quietest profit-killers in poultry farming, it doesn't look urgent until it is. Check around your drinkers today. Does your litter crumble or clump when you squeeze it?

HEAT STRESS MANAGEMENT

James survived his Newcastle scare. Heat stress almost took him out next.

After losing his flock to Newcastle disease in week 1, James rebuilt with strict vaccination. But by week 3 of his new cycle, on one of the hottest afternoons of the dry season, he found 12 birds panting heavily in a corner, wings spread, barely moving.

By week 3, broilers are heavier and far more vulnerable to heat than at week 1 and Nigerian afternoons in the dry season can be brutal.

James quickly opened all vents, added extra drinkers with cool water, and reduced stocking density by spreading birds to an adjoining pen. He lost 3 birds that day. Without action, he could have lost dozens by evening.

Today's lesson: Heat stress signs: panting, wings held away from body, reduced feed intake, huddling near water. On hot afternoons, increase ventilation, add extra cool water points, and reduce midday feeding (feed more in early morning and evening when it's cooler). Never increase stocking density as your birds get heavier and they need more space, not less.

Heat stress can kill faster than disease in week 3 and 4 and most farmers don't see it coming. Watch for panting and spread wings on hot afternoons. What's your cooling setup like? Fans, extra water, shade.

DAILY HEALTH CHECKS

Ngozi spotted one quiet bird on Monday. By acting fast, she saved 580 others.

After her biosecurity scare in week 1, Ngozi became obsessive about one thing: watching her birds closely, every single morning.

On day 11, she noticed one bird standing apart from the group — feathers slightly ruffled, not eating with the others.

She isolated it immediately. Within 24 hours, two more birds showed the same signs.

Because she caught it early and separated the affected birds, she contained what could have spread through her entire 600-bird flock. A vet confirmed early respiratory infection treatable because it was caught on day one, not day five.

Today's lesson: Walk your pen every morning and look for: birds standing apart, ruffled feathers, closed eyes, reduced eating or drinking, laboured breathing. Isolate any suspect bird immediately in a separate pen. Early isolation is the single cheapest disease control tool you have and it costs nothing but attention.

WATER HYGIENE

Biodun fixed his feed. He forgot his water was the real problem.

After his feed mistake in week 1, Biodun upgraded to better starter and grower feed. He expected his flock's growth to bounce back immediately.

It didn't. By day 16, his birds were still underweight.

The drinkers hadn't been cleaned since day one. Algae had built up along the inside walls, and droppings had contaminated the base.

Birds drink twice as much water as they eat in feed by weight. Dirty water is one of the most overlooked causes of poor growth and disease in Nigerian poultry farms because it's invisible until you go looking for it.

Today's lesson: Clean drinkers daily scrub with a brush, not just a rinse. Replace water at least twice a day in hot weather. Add a poultry-safe water sanitiser once weekly. A bird that won't drink dirty water will eat less too; the two are connected.

When was the last time you actually scrubbed your drinkers, not just refilled them? Algae and bacteria build up fast in Nigerian heat. Clean water is the cheapest growth booster on your farm.

VENTILATION AND STOCK DENSITY

His pen smelled fine to him. His birds were breathing ammonia all night.
Tunde, the one who never weighed his birds had a second problem he didn't know about. His pen was sealed tight against the harmattan wind, windows shut, litter unchanged for two weeks.

To Tunde, walking in for two minutes a day, the smell was "manageable."

To birds living in that air 24 hours a day, ammonia buildup was silently damaging their lungs and slowing their growth.

By week 3, his flock had a wet, panting look even in cool weather which is a classic sign of respiratory stress from poor ventilation, not heat.

Today's lesson: Keep stocking density at 8–10 birds per square metre for broilers. Ensure cross-ventilation, air moving in one side, out the other, even in cold weather. If you can smell ammonia when you walk in, your birds have been breathing it far longer than you have. Turn and change litter regularly.

If your pen smells like ammonia, your birds are already suffering for it. Good ventilation isn't about comfort, it's about lung health and feed conversion.
