OGUN STATE COOPERATIVE COLLEGE AT 34: CELEBRATING LEGACY, ADVANCING THE FUTURE (Founded 11th December 1991)

Today, we celebrate a remarkable milestone, 34 years of purposeful learning, leadership development, and unwavering commitment to Cooperative excellence at Ogun State Cooperative College. Since our establishment on 11th December 1991, the College has stood as a beacon of knowledge, service, and innovation in the cooperative sector, not only within Ogun State but across the nation.

Over the years, we have proudly contributed to the growth and transformation of the Cooperative Movement. Numerous Cooperative leaders, administrators, and professionals across various fields have emerged from our institution, carrying with them the discipline, values, and expertise nurtured within our walls. Their impact continues to be felt in government agencies, private enterprises, community organizations, and cooperative societies nationwide.

At Ogun State Cooperative College, our mission extends beyond academic instruction. We are deeply committed to entrepreneurial development, ensuring that our students graduate not only as competent Cooperative leaders but also as innovative thinkers and wealth creators. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical exposure, and enterprise-driven learning, we empower our students with the skills needed to thrive in today’s dynamic economic environment.

As we celebrate this anniversary, we also look forward with renewed determination and clarity of purpose. The world is evolving rapidly, and so must we. In this regard, we look forward to enhanced support from the Government of Ogun State, championed through the leadership of the Ministry, to further strengthen the College and position us to become a truly self-sufficient and future-ready institution. With continued investment and collaboration, we can expand our infrastructure, deepen our programmes, and unlock even greater potential for our students and the cooperative sector.

I extend my heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated staff, who continue to uphold the values that define our College. To our students, you remain the promise of tomorrow, and we applaud your resilience and dedication. To our alumni, thank you for representing us with excellence. To all our past academic and non-academic staff, we say thank you for bequeathing a treasure on to us. And to the Government of Ogun State and all our partners – Cooperative Societies and Unions as well as the Ogun State Co-operative Federation Limited - your support continues to guide and energize our Mission.

As we mark 34 years, let us celebrate our legacy and recommit ourselves to advancing the future of cooperative education and development.

Happy Anniversary to Ogun State Cooperative College!

Together, we move forward — stronger, smarter, and more prepared to serve.

OBISESAN HALL RECOGNIZED AS COOPERATIVE CULTURAL HERITAGE SITE

Yesterday, the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) officially launched the Cooperative Cultural Heritage Platform and the first World Map of sites illustrating how cooperation has shaped culture, education, and livelihoods across generations. Unveiled in a ceremony at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasília — headquarters of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and an architectural masterpiece by Oscar Niemeyer — the platform marks a small yet historic step in safeguarding and celebrating the cooperative movement’s living cultural legacy.

“Cooperatives are not only enterprises; they are bearers of culture, history, and identity,” said Ariel Guarco, President of the ICA. “With this global map, we celebrate cooperation as humanity’s shared heritage, linking people and communities through solidarity and self-help.”

The inaugural 2025 edition highlights 31 founding heritage sites from 25 countries across all regions, from the birthplace of modern cooperation in Rochdale (UK) and the Monumento ao Cooperativismo in Nova Petrópolis (Brazil) to the Amul Dairy Cooperative and Verghese Kurien Museum (India), the Federation of Southern Cooperatives (USA), Moshi Co-operative University (Tanzania), and the ILO Cooperative, Social and Solidarity Economy Unit (Switzerland). The map was built together with ICA Members the Organisation of Brazilian Cooperatives (OCB) and the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) of India, through close collaboration with the ICA Global Office.

“These sites are living classrooms of solidarity,” said Márcio Lopes de Freitas, President of OCB. “They show that cooperation is both history and horizon a cultural force that continues to build fairer societies.”

"I am delighted to share that NCDC has partnered on the technical front in developing this global platform and website, contributing to the documentation and showcase of the timeless legacy of cooperation for the world to see," said Pankaj Bansal (IAS) Managing Director, NCDC.

A number of high-level dignitaries attended the event, includingVanderley Tiger, Secretary of Family Farming and Agroecology; Ambassador Maria Laura de Rocha, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr Rodrigo Lima, Special Advisor to the Director's Office (UNESCO).

A Global Launch and the Beginning of a Nomination Process
The launch marks the beginning of a global nomination process through which cooperatives, federations, and communities worldwide can propose sites, institutions, and living traditions that reflect the cooperative identity.

This process will be guided by clear international criteria defined in the new Charter on the Recognition of Cooperative Cultural Heritage Sites. These standards ensure that each recognised site demonstrates authenticity, community participation, inclusivity, sustainability, and a continuing cooperative mission.

The ICA invites all member organisations, federations, researchers, and citizens to:

Explore the 2025 world map of cooperative heritage;

Review the Charter and selection criteria; and

Nominate new sites and traditions representing cooperative culture in their countries, the process is open at www.culturalheritage.coop/nominations
Recognised nominations will receive the ICA - CCH Label and be featured on the Global Map with a Statement of Recognition from the ICA. The Cooperative Cultural Heritage initiative is led by the ICA Working Group on Cooperative Cultural Heritage (CCH-WG), chaired by ICA Director General Jeroen Douglas with the mentorship of Márcio Lopes de Freitas, President of the OCB. The group brings together cooperators from Morocco, Germany, Nigeria, India, Japan, the UK, Brazil, and the United States.

Coming Soon: The Intangible Cooperative Heritage List
Building on this momentum, the ICA announced the upcoming release of the Intangible Cooperative Heritage List (foreseen in 2026)—a register of oral traditions, practices, and rituals that embody cooperative culture. This next phase will complement the physical heritage map by highlighting living traditions that carry cooperative values into the future.

The ICA’s cultural work also aligns closely with its participation in UNESCO MONDIACULT 2025 event held in Barcelona, where the ICA co-hosted the session “Cooperatives in Culture for Diversity, Cultural Rights and Decent Work.” The ICA reaffirmed that culture must be recognised as a pillar of sustainable development, with cooperatives as key actors in linking cultural rights and decent work.

STRONG COOPERATIVE STRUCTURE KEY TO S’WEST ECONOMIC GROWTH — Odu’a President

The President of Odua Cooperative Conglomerate Limited Elder Felix Ajibode, has emphasised that small-scale businesses in the South West cannot thrive without a strong cooperative structure.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, held at Chief Samuel Adeloye Aboluwodi Boardroom, Obisesan Hall, Ibadan, Ajibode highlighted the pivotal role of cooperatives in fostering entrepreneurship by providing low-interest loans to small-scale business owners.

“Without a strong cooperative in the South West, there will be no business. Our cooperative has helped small-scale entrepreneurs by encouraging members to save and access loans at single-digit or very low interest rates,” he stated.

Ajibode further stressed the economic importance of cooperatives, stating, “Without cooperatives in the South West, there would be no economy, and there would be no life.

“Nationally, the South West remains the strongest in terms of cooperative structures. Historically, we have led in this sector in Nigeria.”

Addressing challenges in opening accounts with some banks, Ajibode clarified that cooperative societies do not require Corporate Affairs Commission registration to operate legally.

“The Cooperative Act stands alone and defines who can register cooperatives. Certificates issued by the Director of Cooperative Services serve as legal tender, allowing cooperatives to transact business, own property, and even take legal action if necessary,” he explained.

He also revealed that Odu’a Cooperative currently boasts assets worth N50bn, with over N30bn in liquid cash contributed by cooperators across the South West.

During the event, representatives from three commercial banks highlighted the benefits of business partnerships with the cooperative.
