🌧️ When the Sky Drops Fish: The Science Behind a Bizarre Phenomenon
By Editorial Desk | Science & Environment
It sounds like folklore. It looks like magic. But every now and then, reports emerge of small fish raining down from the sky. Strange? Yes. Supernatural? No. The explanation lies firmly in atmospheric science.
🌍 What Is “Fish Rain”?
“Fish rain” is a rare but documented natural event where small aquatic animals—mostly fish—are found scattered on land after a storm.
At the center of this phenomenon is a powerful weather system known as a waterspout.
⚙️ How It Happens
The process unfolds in three clear stages:
1. 🌪️ Lift Phase
A waterspout forms over a body of water—such as a lake, river, or sea.
Its intense rotating winds act like a vacuum, pulling up water along with small fish and other light aquatic creatures.
2. 🌬️ Transport Phase
The storm system moves across areas, carrying these organisms high in the atmosphere—sometimes over several kilometers.
3. 🌧️ Drop Phase
As the storm weakens, it releases its contents.
The result? Fish falling to the ground—often mixed with rainfall.
🐟 Why Only Small Fish?
Not all aquatic life gets swept into the sky. Here’s why:
Small fish are lightweight and easily lifted by strong winds
Larger fish are too heavy to be carried
Juvenile species are the most commonly reported
🌐 Where Has This Happened?
Although rare, fish rain has been recorded in several parts of the world:
Honduras – Known for recurring annual events
India – Occasional but verified incidents
Africa – Reported in some regions after severe storms
❗ Fact vs Myth
Let’s clear the air:
Fish are not created in clouds
Rain does not produce living organisms
There is no supernatural cause
This is simply nature at work—an interaction between water bodies and powerful wind systems.
🧠 Final Insight
Nature doesn’t break its rules—it reveals them in unexpected ways.
Fish falling from the sky may look mysterious, but it is nothing more than meteorology in action.

Beware of Expired Products During the New Year: A Public Health Advisory
As the New Year approaches, markets and shops are usually flooded with food, drinks, drugs, and household products. During this period, some companies and distributors may push out large volumes of goods to retailers in order to clear old stock and avoid financial losses or debts on their side. Unfortunately, this practice increases the risk of expired or nearly expired products finding their way into our homes.
Consuming expired products poses serious health risks. Expired foods and drinks can cause food poisoning, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and infections due to the growth of harmful bacteria and toxins. Expired drugs may lose their effectiveness, fail to treat illnesses properly, or even become toxic, leading to complications, treatment failure, and drug resistance. Using expired cosmetics or chemicals can also result in skin irritation, allergies, and other harmful reactions.
Health education is therefore very important. Consumers are strongly advised to always check expiry dates before buying or using any product. Do not be carried away by cheap prices, promotions, or festive excitement. Ensure product labels are clear, seals are intact, and storage conditions are appropriate. Avoid products with unusual smell, taste, color, or texture.
This public health advice is coming from the Environmental Health Right Campaign (E.H.R.C) as part of its commitment to protecting community health and consumer safety. Checking expiry dates protects your health, saves money, and prevents avoidable illnesses. Remember, your life is more valuable than any discounted product. Stay alert, stay informed, and make safety your priority this New Year and beyond.

*World Toilet Day: A Call for Nigeria to Prioritize Environmental Health Officers and End Open Defecation*

World Toilet Day is a yearly reminder that sanitation is not a privilege but a fundamental human right. Yet, in Nigeria, millions of citizens still live without access to safe, dignified, and functional toilets. This gap continues to expose communities to preventable diseases, environmental pollution, and avoidable deaths. One of the most stubborn sanitation challenges facing the nation is open defecation, a practice driven largely by poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and long-term government negligence toward sanitation systems.

For decades, sanitation has not received the same attention as other sectors like education, health care, and roads. Many communities—especially in rural and peri-urban areas—do not have toilets, not because they reject them, but because they cannot afford to build one, lack the technical guidance to construct safe facilities, or live in areas neglected by government development programs. The result is a cycle where poverty fuels poor sanitation, and poor sanitation deepens poverty through disease, low productivity, and increased medical costs.

A critical but often overlooked solution lies in strengthening the Environmental Health workforce across Nigeria. Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) are professionally trained to enforce sanitation laws, educate communities, conduct sanitary inspections, promote hygiene behaviour change, and implement community-led sanitation initiatives. Unfortunately, Nigeria continues to experience a shortage of these crucial officers due to under-employment, poor recruitment rates, and a diminishing presence at the community level.

If Nigeria is serious about ending open defecation, the government must prioritize the employment, training, and deployment of Environmental Health Officers in every ward, local government, and state. These officers are the backbone of public health enforcement and commun
