What happens when we stop asking, “How do we make boys behave?” and start asking, “What do boys need to thrive?”

At the 2026 Ibadan Boys Conference, we explored what it means to raise boys who are not only successful, but balanced.

Boys who can understand their emotions.
Boys who can communicate when something is wrong.
Boys who can ask questions without fear.
Boys who can discover their strengths and imagine a future beyond their present circumstances.

From conversations around mental health, s*x education, bullying and substance abuse to career development, self-expression and public speaking, IBC 2026 created room for boys to learn, question, reflect and grow.

Raising balanced boys is not the responsibility of parents alone, it takes a community.

The conference may be over, but the conversation continues.

What does it really mean to raise a balanced boy?

Is it enough for him to be obedient?
To “toughen up” when things get difficult?

In our reflections on our Ìbàdàn Boys 2026 Conference, Nathaniel Ashaye challenges us to think beyond these measures.

We see that a balanced boy is one who is learning to understand his emotions, communicate clearly, build strong values, discover his strengths, and pursue his dreams with purpose.

But boys cannot develop these qualities in isolation. They need guidance and safe spaces.
The work of raising balanced boys goes beyond one conference, one school, or one organisation.
It is a responsibility we all share.

What if we stopped asking, “What is wrong with boys?” and started asking, “What is happening around them?”

Beyond identifying the challenges around the boy child,we must ask the questions that lead to action; Who is helping them build healthier ideas of masculinity?

Boy-child advocacy is not about excusing harmful behaviour. It is about creating the guidance, support, accountability and safe spaces boys need to grow into healthy, responsible men.

In this article, “Why Boy-Child Advocacy Can No Longer Be Optional in Nigeria,” written by Sharon Makanjuola, she highlights the importance of intentional support, guidance, mentorship, and protection for boys.

In today’s social climate, advocating for the boy child can no longer be an after thought.

It’s in the little things; in the conversations we have with boys, In the values we teach them, In the spaces we create for them to grow, express themselves, and thrive.
Advocacy isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s simply about being intentional about how we show up.

The boy child deserves more than our attention.

Boy-Child Advocacy can no longer be an afterthought.

In today’s social climate, supporting the development and wellbeing of boys requires more than occasional conversations or campaigns. It requires intentionality and a commitment to making advocacy part of our everyday lives.

Boy-child advocacy is reflected in the little things:
• The conversations we have with boys
• The values we model
• The spaces we create for them to express themselves
• The support systems we build around them
• The opportunities we provide for them to learn, grow and thrive

Advocacy is not always about making the biggest statement. Sometimes, it is about consistently showing up in the ways that matter.
As individuals, communities, organisations, parents, mentors, educators and leaders, we all have a role to play.

Speak up. Show up. Support the work.
Because the boy child needs more than our attention. He needs our intentionality.
