RE-EXAMINATION OF THE THESIS OR DISSERTATION
Postgraduate studies require students to conduct extensive research and present their findings in the form of a thesis or dissertation.
After putting in years of hard work, receiving a mark that one is unhappy with can be disheartening.
This situation raises the important question: can a postgraduate student ask for a re-examination of their thesis or dissertation mark?
The answer is complex.
First, it is essential for students to familiarize themselves with their university's specific guidelines regarding re-examination requests. Most universities have established policies that outline the procedures for appealing a mark. Often, these policies include a formal process that students must follow. For instance, a student may need to submit a written request or appeal explaining their reasons for seeking a re-evaluation. Common grounds for dissatisfaction can include perceived unfairness in the assessment, a lack of feedback on the work, or a belief that the evaluation did not consider all applicable criteria.
Many educational institutions recognize the importance of transparency in grading. As a result, students may have access to detailed feedback on their thesis or dissertation. This feedback can help them understand where they can improve and also provide a basis for their appeal.
Moreover, engaging in a constructive discussion with the faculty or school or department supervisor or the examination office can also be beneficial. Students may schedule a meeting to discuss their concerns, which can sometimes lead to informal resolutions or reconsiderations before entering the formal appeal process. In some cases, institutions may offer a chance to revise and resubmit certain sections of the thesis, depending on the university’s policy.
However, it is important to note that merely being unhappy with a grade is usually not enough to warrant a re-examination.
