RE-EXAMINATION OF THE THESIS OR DISSERTATION

Postgraduate studies require students to conduct extensive research and present their findings in the form of a thesis or dissertation.

After putting in years of hard work, receiving a mark that one is unhappy with can be disheartening.

This situation raises the important question: can a postgraduate student ask for a re-examination of their thesis or dissertation mark?

The answer is complex.

First, it is essential for students to familiarize themselves with their university's specific guidelines regarding re-examination requests. Most universities have established policies that outline the procedures for appealing a mark. Often, these policies include a formal process that students must follow. For instance, a student may need to submit a written request or appeal explaining their reasons for seeking a re-evaluation. Common grounds for dissatisfaction can include perceived unfairness in the assessment, a lack of feedback on the work, or a belief that the evaluation did not consider all applicable criteria.

Many educational institutions recognize the importance of transparency in grading. As a result, students may have access to detailed feedback on their thesis or dissertation. This feedback can help them understand where they can improve and also provide a basis for their appeal.

Moreover, engaging in a constructive discussion with the faculty or school or department supervisor or the examination office can also be beneficial. Students may schedule a meeting to discuss their concerns, which can sometimes lead to informal resolutions or reconsiderations before entering the formal appeal process. In some cases, institutions may offer a chance to revise and resubmit certain sections of the thesis, depending on the university’s policy.

However, it is important to note that merely being unhappy with a grade is usually not enough to warrant a re-examination.

USING BOTH RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES IN THE SAME STUDY

Our experience in postgraduate studies shows that students are often faced with the decision of whether to use research questions, hypotheses, or both in their studies.

Each approach has its merits and drawbacks.

Using research questions is a common practice in qualitative research. Research questions guide the study's focus and help define what the researcher aims to uncover.

For instance, a student examining the impact of social media on teenagers in Ghana may ask, "How does social media influence the self-esteem of teenagers in Ghana? " This question sets a clear direction for the research and encourages a thorough exploration of the topic. The strength of research questions lies in their flexibility; they allow for a broad examination of complex subjects and can unearth rich, qualitative data through interviews or surveys.

On the other hand, hypotheses are typically utilized in quantitative research. A hypothesis provides a specific, testable prediction about the relationship between variables.

For example, the student might propose the hypothesis, "Increased social media usage in Ghana is negatively correlated with teenagers' self-esteem. " This approach allows students to focus their study on measurable outcomes and set a clear framework for analysis. Hypotheses can also facilitate the use of statistical tools, making it easier to validate findings and draw conclusions.

However, combining both research questions and hypotheses in one study can create a nuanced approach. This combination allows researchers to explore a broader context through questions while simultaneously testing specific relationships with hypotheses.

For instance, a study could start with the research question about social media's influence on self-esteem and then formulate a hypothesis regarding the expected direction of that influence. This mixed-methods strategy can enhance the depth and rigor of research.
