The Illusion of Action
Rescuing the Ogbomosho children and teachers is a welcome step, but rescue alone is not enough.
What happens next? Who is providing trauma counselling and psychological support? How will schools and communities be guided to prevent stigma against the survivors? What welfare and educational support has been put in place for them? Most importantly, what concrete measures are being taken to ensure that no other children or teachers become victims?
Celebrating the rescue without addressing these questions creates the illusion of action. Real action means protecting lives before tragedy happens, supporting survivors after rescue, and ensuring our schools are truly safe.
Government must go beyond emergency responses and fulfil its primary responsibility of providing security and the welfare of its citizens.
