Ensuring Nigeria's 2025 Budget Serves the People, Not Debt.

At Promad, our mission is to empower both the government and other actors by advocating for transparency, accountability, and citizen participation. As part of our approach to this we believe it’s important for Nigerians to understand where the country’s 2025 national budget is going and how it’s being used to improve their lives.

However, managing national debt is necessary, a large part of the budget is focused on paying off loans. At PROMAD, we advocate that the government should make sure enough money is being put into areas that really matter to Nigerians, like healthcare, education, and infrastructure with adequate data collection in making decisions for appropriations. These are efforts that will improve people’s daily lives and help grow the country’s economy.

Additionally, we’re calling for a more open budget process that includes input from civil society, local communities, and experts. It’s important that the people’s voices are heard, so that funds are spent where they’re needed most.

In 2022, PROMAD built a technology solution for community needs assessment and data collection to ensure the government can focus on making data-driven decisions on appropriations. Budgeting is not just about how much money is being spent, it’s about how it’s being spent. We need a clear system to track how funds are used and make sure there’s no mismanagement. Public officials should be held accountable for ensuring the money is used properly, and we’re pushing for stronger citizens and community oversight mechanisms through our social accountability initiative, Follow The Projects , to keep implementation of public projects in check.

Finally, PROMAD is advocating the use of modern tools to track how money is spent, and we believe in regular updates to the public. Transparency isn’t just about making sure money is spent wisely, it’s about building trust between the government and the people. We call on the government to commit to an open process that puts citizens’ needs first.
