The Africa Projects Development Centre (APDC) marked its eighth anniversary yesterday with the graduation ceremony of the fourth cohort of the EU-funded HealthyDiets4Africa (HD4A) and the third cohort of Nutripreneurs training programmes.

Both programmes are central to APDC's response to the continent's triple burden of malnutrition and entrenched food insecurity: systemic challenges that severely strain healthcare systems and hinder economic development, particularly for the continent's women and youth. Over ten rigorous weeks, thirty-four graduates received hands-on training spanning technical skills, financial literacy, digital marketing, and business management, delivered by in-house specialists alongside nutrition and catering consultants from institutions including the University of Abuja Specialist Hospital (UATH).

In his anniversary address, the Managing Director of APDC reflected on what has already been achieved:

“Upon my retirement from the African Development Bank, having seen first-hand the worrisome levels of unemployment among Africa's youth, I set up the Centre to address these issues. So far, we have empowered over 10,000 youths and women across Africa. Over 70 per cent have gone on to establish thriving businesses that empower others, and that is precisely what our mission demands. Our training programmes are 100 per cent free, and we will not deviate from that mandate. We have some institutions that support certain initiatives, and we hope that the trend will continue so we can increase our reach. We aim to see every single graduate engaged in productive ventures, and we are committed to monitoring your progress and supporting your journey. Now, to the staff, both past and present, who have put in tireless work, I say thank you.”

The ceremony also featured a goodwill message from the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Professor Idris M. Bugaje, represented by Dr Adams Maidodo, who addressed the graduates directly.

"Nigeria and Africa need your farms, your products, your innovations, and your leadership. As you step into this next phase, know that NBTE remains committed to supporting quality technical education and to building the enabling environment for you to thrive."

To APDC's management, Dr Maidodo added that eight years of consistent, impactful work were a testament to the organization's resolve in technical and vocational education delivery and a foundation worth building on.

Distinguished guests representing key sectors in Nigeria's agricultural and health development attended the event; among them were partners from ActionAid and IFAD VCDP, all of whom witnessed what proved to be the highlight of the afternoon: the agripitch competition, in which six teams presented innovative solutions to challenges across the food and nutrition value chain. After a keenly contested round, Sharon Ineh Sokwo, CEO of Plume Farms, claimed first place, with Zarflo Farms and N&D Agrotech taking second and third, respectively. The top three teams shared cash prizes totalling ₦ 260,000.

Recognition, however, was not reserved for competitors alone. Three staff members, each with five years of loyal service, were honoured for their dedication: Ifeoma Umeania (Director of Administrative Services), Amina Yunusa (Legal and Strategic Operations Officer), and Zuliat Yusuf (Horticulture and Mushroom Officer).

To our global network of partners, eight years of impact is proof of what becomes possible when institutions invest in young people. The invitation to deepen those ties, in service of Africa's development, remains open. APDC recently hosted the closing ceremony of the 9th edition of its Fashionistas (You First Cohort 2) training Programme, marking the completion of a 12-week intensive course designed to equip Nigerian women with practical skills in fashion design, make-up artistry, and hair braiding and crafting.

The ceremony brought the cohort's journey to a close, with all 50 women emerging ready to take their place in Nigeria's creative economy. To date, more than 10,000 women and young people across Africa have benefited from APDC's creative and vocational programmes, an achievement that positions The Centre as a national catalyst for women's economic empowerment.

This cohort was made possible through a grant from First Bank of Nigeria Limited. As part of its corporate social responsibility commitment to empower women and strengthen Nigeria's creative economy, the bank's support is enabling APDC to train 200 women across four You First cohorts over the course of one year.

In his welcome address, Dr Chiji Ojukwu, Managing Director of APDC Group, underscored the importance of the partnership and acknowledged the presence of representatives from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and its FCT counterpart. "Your presence here means much to us; it signals that government recognises the work we are doing, and for that we are grateful," he said. "This is our 9th cohort, yet it remains a drop in the ocean. Without our donors and partners, we would not have come this far. We are expanding year on year because of them, and we want to take in even more women." He also pointed to APDC's expansion plans, noting that The Centre has acquired properties on which it is developing a hostel to accommodate trainees from outside Abuja in future cohorts.

Turning to the graduating class, Dr Ojukwu charged the women to translate their training into livelihoods and leadership. "You are leaving here with more than skills; you are leaving with a responsibility," he said. "Build something of your own. Employ others. Lift the women coming behind you. That is how this programme multiplies its impact."

A goodwill message followed from the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, fsi. In her address, delivered on her behalf by Mrs Sadiatu Salawu, she congratulated the graduates and situated the initiative within the Federal Government's policy direction. "Today is far more than a graduation ceremony; it is a celebration of resilience, creativity, purpose, and economic empowerment," she said. "It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when visionary partnerships between government, the private sector, and development-focused institutions are intentionally directed towards uplifting women."

The Minister noted that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which prioritises inclusive economic growth, women's empowerment, job creation, and grassroots development. She drew attention to the Renewed Hope Social Impact Intervention (RHSII-774), describing it as a vehicle for ensuring that empowerment and social protection reach every community across the 774 Local Government Areas of the Federation.

Speaking directly to the graduates, the Minister urged them to treat the day as a beginning rather than an end. "Go forward boldly as ambassadors of a new generation of empowered Nigerian women: creative, resilient, self-reliant, and unstoppable," she charged. She further reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to supporting policies and programmes that create enabling environments for women-led enterprises to thrive.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of FirstBank's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Olusegun Alebiosu, Dr. Tobechi Enyioko, Snr. Marketing Sales Coordinator, Events/Partnership, Marketing and Corporate Communication at FirstBank, commended the graduates on their dedication. "Today is a proud moment for all of us, and a testimony to our belief in women, skills development, and inclusive prosperity," she remarked. "APDC is launching 50 more women into the active economy, and I congratulate each of you for demonstrating how dogged, dexterous, and determined you are."

She went on to highlight the cumulative impact of the partnership. "With today's graduation, 100 women are now active participants in the economy, with 100 more still to come. This partnership is designed to ensure that 200 women are equipped within one year, and we remain committed to seeing the programme through to its conclusion. We celebrate you, and we urge you to take everything you have learned here and build something remarkable with it."

As is customary at the close of every cohort, the ceremony featured a parade in which the graduating class showcased their final projects, demonstrating creativity and mastery of their respective crafts. The event culminated in the presentation of certificates to all trainees, marking their completion of the programme.

Special recognition was given through a series of awards, including the coveted 'You First' Award for Best Dressed in Fashion Design. Start-Up Awards, with a combined estimated value exceeding ₦ 4 million, were conferred upon the top graduates and runners-up across three categories: Best Fashion Designer, Best Hair Stylist, and Best Make-Up Artist. These prizes are intended to provide the awardees with the working capital and tools required to launch their businesses immediately.

As these emerging creative entrepreneurs begin their professional journeys, APDC and FirstBank reaffirmed their commitment to continued support, ensuring that the graduates can leverage their newly acquired skills and contribute to Nigeria's creative and economic landscape. The success of You First Cohort 2 reinforces APDC's leadership in shaping the future of Africa's creative industry, one empowered entrepreneur at a time.

Further updates on the programme's progress and impact will follow as APDC continues its mission to transform lives across the continent.

From APDC Trainee to Agribusiness CEO: The Inspiring Journey of Mr Baba Achegbulu Wilson

Hailing from Benue State, Mr Baba Achegbulu Wilson joined the Africa Projects Development Centre (APDC) as one of the pioneer beneficiaries of our Cohort 1 IFAD AgriHub Agribusiness training and incubation programme during the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

His exceptional performance upon graduation made retaining him an easy decision. As our Poultry Manager, Wilson didn't just manage farm operations; he elevated our organic poultry business to new heights whilst diligently mentoring young men and women entering the enterprise. Late last year, Wilson shared his dream of launching his own poultry business. Because our core vision is to nurture and empower youth to establish their own successful enterprises, we gave him our warmest blessing
and hosted a befitting send-forth party.

His immense gratitude shone through when, just one month into his new venture, he arrived at our Managing Director's birthday celebration bearing five crates of eggs, a gesture that spoke volumes.

Today, our Managing Director, Dr Chiji Ojukwu, in the company of our management team, had the profound honour of commissioning his new integrated farm in Sheda, Abuja FCT. What Wilson has built in just four months is nothing short of astounding: a thriving poultry pen housing over 5,000 layers, a brooding section for 1,000+ day-old chicks, a greenhouse flourishing with lush bell peppers, well-maintained collapsible fish tanks, a purpose-built conference/training room, and staff quarters.
Wilson is a living inspiration to young men and women everywhere. It is proof that with passion and dedication, incredible success is within reach.

To support his brilliant trajectory, APDC is thrilled to pledge an ongoing collaboration. Moving forward, we will incorporate Wilson's farm into our internship programmes to train and incubate the next generation of agribusiness leaders. 🤝

Congratulations, Wilson, and to all the young people out there focused on growing and making society a better place. APDC is incredibly proud of you! 👏

The Africa Projects Development Centre proudly hosted the opening ceremony for the fourth cohort of the European Commission's HealthyDiets4Africa (HD4A) training programme and the third cohort of the Nutripreneur Incubation and Training initiative, two programmes at the heart of our response to Africa's triple burden of malnutrition: undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and widespread food insecurity.

Managing Director Dr Chiji Ojukwu opened proceedings, speaking candidly about the road already travelled and the distance still ahead:

"We have trained 9,000 youths and women so far, and by the end of this year we will have trained an additional 1,000. Whilst it is a drop in the ocean, I know it creates a ripple effect. Over 70% have gone on to establish thriving businesses that empower others, and that is precisely the mission. Our programmes are 100% free, and we will not deviate from that mandate. Our aim is to see every single graduate engaged in a productive venture — and we are committed to walking that journey with them."

Thirty-seven trainees have started a 10-week programme that combines practical nutrition training with business and financial skills. Programme leads Mary Okwor and Angela Nnaji outlined the training structure, while nutrition consultant Christopher Dafom provided a detailed overview of the nutrition curriculum.

The programme draws on the expertise of in-house specialists and external consultants from the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), institutions whose involvement ensures the training is grounded in both clinical rigour and practical agricultural application.

The ceremony also drew meaningful private sector commitment. Dr Najib Zakari (CEO, Najib Homes) and Prince Okunlola Abdulkareem A (CEO, Majesty Villa) each pledged a parcel of land to the overall best-performing graduates, a powerful signal of confidence in the talent this programme is built to produce.

Thirty-seven trainees. Ten weeks. One mission. The journey starts today.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and Africa Projects Development Centre Group Sign Landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Revitalize Youth Development.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and Africa Projects Development Centre Group Sign Landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Revitalise Youth Development in a strategic partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD).

The collaboration was formalised yesterday in Abuja through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, H.E. Comrade Ayodele Olawande, and the Managing Director of APDC Group, Dr Chiji Ojukwu.

At the heart of this partnership lies the revitalisation of Youth Development Centres across Nigeria. By integrating private-sector efficiency with public-sector reach, this collaboration aims to transform these facilities into high-impact hubs for vocational training, digital innovation, and entrepreneurial incubation.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, described the collaboration as a shared commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive youth development framework. He added that the partnership will strengthen the Ministry’s institutional capacity in donor engagement, project implementation, and results-based monitoring and evaluation.

"I commend the APDC Group for their readiness to collaborate with the Ministry on this journey of genuine, organic development," the Minister stated. "Together, we will curate meaningful opportunities for our youth, and I look forward to the profound impact this partnership will undoubtedly deliver."

Detailing the practical strategy that APDC brings to this national assignment, Dr Chiji Ojukwu noted that success in youth development comes down to more than just training; it requires a model that communities can truly lean on.

"Our approach goes beyond traditional empowerment; it builds a sense of communal ownership and strengthens local capacity so that development continues long after our work is done," Dr Ojukwu explained. "We have empowered over 9,000 youth and women through our programmes in Agribusiness, the Creative Arts, and the Circular Economy, achieving an impressive 70% enterprise sustainability rate."

He further noted that the partnership with the Ministry is the catalyst needed to bring these results to a national scale. "This MoU now enables us to replicate this proven model through revitalised Youth Development Centres, extending our reach to communities across the Federation that have long awaited such opportunities." Ultimately, he noted that in addition to empowering youths and women and strengthening economic livelihoods of our communities, the lessons of experience will feed into and enhance future policies on youth development in the country.

As Nigeria's youth population grows, so does our collective responsibility to provide the infrastructure they need to thrive. This MoU represents a shared commitment to ensuring that no young Nigerian is left behind, and that every individual has the tools, training, and support to turn their potential into lasting prosperity.

The vision is clear; the foundation is set; and the work begins now.
