Today, we mark Democracy Day in Nigeria with reflection and urgency.

Democracy is not only about elections, it is about safety, dignity, and the right of every citizen to live without fear. Yet, we are reminded daily through rising insecurity and the painful reality of kidnapped students and teachers that for many Nigerians, these rights are still under threat.

As highlighted through civic engagement platforms like the Civic Lens Project, democracy must go beyond celebration to accountability, transparency, and citizen-centered governance. When schools are unsafe and communities live in fear, our democracy is tested.

At Aidwell Development Foundation, we reaffirm that a true democracy is one where lives are protected, voices are heard, and leaders are accountable.

Democracy must work for the people every day, not just on Democracy Day.
