Day 4 – GiveHerOne Pad: Tackling Menstrual Waste and Empowering Girls in Gboko Project
On Day 4 of the GiveHerOne Pad: Tackling Menstrual Waste and Empowering Girls in Gboko project, Gender Equality Club Nigeria successfully conducted a Menstrual Hygiene Workshop at Masatadi International Academy.
The workshop commenced at 10:00 AM and concluded at 11:45 AM, with active participation from about 51 students, including both girls and boys. The session created an engaging learning environment where students freely participated through questions and answers.
The workshop was facilitated by Rebecca Aondoakura, the Health Program Officer of Gender Equality Club Nigeria. During the session, students were trained on menstrual hygiene management, proper menstrual care practices, and the importance of breaking harmful cultural norms and misconceptions surrounding menstruation.
Participants expressed excitement and appreciation for the knowledge gained during the training. One notable testimony came from Dzer Stephen, an SSS 3 male student, who shared that the program helped him see a sanitary pad for the first time and understand how often girls and women need to change pads during menstruation each day.
Female participants also actively engaged during the session by asking relevant and thoughtful questions, including inquiries about the appropriate age for girls to begin menstruation. This demonstrated the growing confidence and openness of students to discuss menstrual health issues.
Students were also reminded that 28 May 2026 marks Menstrual Hygiene Day, and they were encouraged to observe the day by using the knowledge gained from the workshop to educate and support fellow students within their school and community. The facilitators emphasized the importance of peer-to-peer awareness in breaking menstrual stigma and promoting healthy menstrual hygiene practices.
The workshop was supported by the project team members, Betty and Medina, alongside Comfort and volunteer team member Ayo Asaaga. Their support contributed greatly to the success and smooth coordination of the activity.
At the end of the session, students expressed strong interest in having more workshops and educational programs on menstrual hygiene and adolescent health, reflecting the positive impact and relevance of the initiative within the school community.
