What you can learn from 'The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying': A Book Highlights
For years, Bronnie Ware worked closely with people in their final weeks of life. Below are the five recurring themes in their regrets:
#1: "I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me."
The most common regret was not living a life aligned with one’s true self. Many admitted they had abandoned their dreams to meet others’ expectations. The lesson? Chase your dreams now—before it’s too late. Your health, your time and freedom should not be taken for granted.
#2: "I wish I hadn’t worked so hard."
Many regretted the endless grind of work, especially men who missed out on their children’s childhoods and meaningful time with their partners. Therefore, Simplify your life, prioritize balance, and make space for what truly matters. Life’s joy is found in connection, not in long hours and lost time.
Regret #3: "I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings."
Holding back feelings to avoid conflict left many with bitterness and regret. Suppressed emotions not only hinder relationships but can also impact one's well-being. Have the courage to express yourself—it can heal relationships or help release unhealthy ones.
Regret #4: "I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends."
Old friendships were often neglected amid busy lives, leaving many wishing they had made more effort to stay in touch. Don’t wait for a crisis to value your friendships. Nurture them now, because, in the end, love and relationships matter most.
Regret #5: "I wish that I had let myself be happier."
Many realised too late that happiness is a choice. Many stayed stuck in routines, fearing change, and pretending to be content. Choose joy, embrace laughter, and let go of the fear of what others might think.
While the above listed are regrettable, they pale in contrast to the regret of not accepting Jesus as one's Saviour and Lord.
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" - Mark 8:36-37.
Therefore, give your life to Jesus today.
