GOVERNMENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE (GTC) FUNTUA, TEMPORARILY RELOCATED TO GTC MASHI, GOT A NEW PERMANENT LOCATION IN FUNTUA.
Katsina State Governor Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda has approved the relocation of GTC Funtua to Government College (Day wing) Funtua as it's permanent location. To use the abandoned students hostel of Government College Pilot, Funtua.
In 2022, the school was temporarily relocated to Government Technical College, Mashi, following the award of contract for its renovation by the former Governor Aminu Bello Masari.
During the renovation period, the establishment of the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Funtua came up in late 2023.
Following extensive consultations, the Funtua community unanimously resolved to allocate the permanent site to the newly established university in the overall interest of the community. Consequently, due to the lack of permanent location, GTC Funtua remained in Mashi.
This situation had a devastating impact on students enrolment, as the school's population dropped from over 1,000 students to a little above 100 due to the long distance between Funtua and Mashi.
With the school's permanent site no longer available, several neighbouring local government areas, including Danja, Bakori and Dandume, began advocating for the college to be permanently relocated to their respective areas. At one point in 2024, a directive was issued for all the facilities of GTC Funtua to be transferred to Government Rural Boarding Secondary School (GRBSS) Danja, as its new permanent location. In the same year, there was a report that, the state government began considering scrapping the school completely for the same reason.
The Funtua Patriotic Foundation strongly opposed the proposal and immediately commenced consultations and advocacy to ensure that the institution remained in Funtua.
Recognising the importance of the college to the educational and economic development of Funtua, the Foundation intensified its advocacy by engaging respected elders, community leaders, politicians and other critical stakeholders whose support could help achieve this objective.
In the course of these efforts, the Foundation sought and received the support of Hon Abubakar Total, Mallam Lawal Sani (the then chairman of Funtua) and Hon. Musa Adamu among many other well-meaning individuals who remained committed to finding a lasting solution.
The advocacy gained further momentum in late 2025 when the then Vice Principal of the College Mallam Zubairu Isiyaku (now Acting Principal) approached the Foundation with concerns that the Federal Government's Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) intervention programme, already benefiting many state technical colleges, including GTC Mashi, could not be extended to GTC Funtua due to lack of a permanent site. Similarly, the college also stood to lose many educational intervention projects under the AGILE programme due to the same challenge.
This development prompted the Foundation to formally approach the Honourable Member representing Funtua Constituency in the Katsina State House of Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Muhammad Total, seeking legislative intervention.
Responding to the appeal, Hon. Total presented a motion before the Katsina State House of Assembly requesting the relocation of Government Technical College, Funtua, to the Government College (Day Wing), Funtua. The motion received unanimous support from members of the House and was subsequently transmitted by the Speaker to His Excellency, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, for approval.
His Excellency graciously approved the request and directed the Katsina State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to cede the Government College (Day Wing), Funtua, to the Science and Technical Education Board (STEB) as the new permanent site of Government Technical College, Funtua.
In furtherance to this landmark decision, today the Funtua Patriotic Foundation in conjunction with the Funtua Consultative Forum, received a delegation from the Science and Technical Education Board (STEB). The delegation inspected the proposed site and conducted an assessment of the renovation works required to facilitate the immediate commencement of academic activities.
The Funtua Patriotic Foundation expresses its profound appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, for his visionary leadership and favourable approval of this request. The Foundation also commends Hon. Abubakar Total, the Katsina State House of Assembly, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Science and Technical Education Board (STEB) and all stakeholders whose contributions made this achievement possible.
We look forward to the prompt commencement of renovation works at the new site to enable Government Technical College, Funtua, resume operations in its permanent home and continue its vital role in producing skilled manpower for the development of Katsina State and Nigeria at large.
