A three-storey building under construction has collapsed in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The building reportedly collapsed on Thursday morning, October 8, at No. 11 Emeka Ugwuanyi Street, by Anabanaba, amid heavy rainfall.

A woman and her child were reportedly trapped beneath the rubble.

Emergency responders, including the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have deployed equipment and personnel to the scene as rescue efforts continue.

Authorities are yet to confirm the number of casualties or establish the cause of the collapse.

The Obi of Oligie, Igbanke, HRM Lucky O. Chukwuma, has said Igbanke people are Igbo and should not be identified as Idu people simply because they are located in Edo State.

He explained that Oligie is not Idu, pointing to differences in language and cultural identity. He also noted that Igbanke shares links with communities in Igbo-speaking local government areas.

He also added that names such as “Chukwuma” reflect the Igbo identity of his people.

His message was clear: being in Edo State does not, in his view, make Igbanke Idu

From the role of Umuada in community affairs to women’s traditional institutions, titles, leadership roles and systems of communal influence, Igbo women have historically held significant power within their communities.

Yes, aspects of traditional Igbo society can and should be questioned, including male primogeniture and inheritance practices. But reducing an entire culture to these practices ignores the many institutions that gave women a voice, authority and influence.

Peter Obi Meets Cancer Survivors.

Obi called for at least five fully equipped specialised cancer centres in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, alongside stronger prevention, screening, early detection, research and affordable treatment.

He said no Nigerian should die because cancer care is too far away, a diagnosis came too late or treatment is unaffordable.

Peter Obi has outlined his vision for Nigeria, saying his focus is to tackle corruption and redirect public resources towards development.

Speaking in a recent BBC interview, Obi said money lost to corruption should instead be used to improve schools, create jobs and strengthen the economy, Nigerians should be able to go to their farms without fear of being killed while trying to produce food for the country.

His vision, he said, is to build a Nigeria where people have access to opportunities, can work safely and where government resources are used for the benefit of citizens.

Aged Woman Paraded In Nkanu, Enugu, Over Alleged Witchcraft Accusations.

An aged woman has reportedly been paraded by villagers in Nkanu, Enugu State, after being accused of using charms to cause the deaths of people in the community.

According to reports, the woman was taken to the grave of a woman who recently died and allegedly forced to take an oath, declaring that if she had any involvement in the woman’s death, evil would befall her.

An Igbo woman, Henrietta Uzoamaka Didigu, is among new judges sworn into the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice for a four-year, non-renewable tenure.

Didigu, who represents Nigeria, took the oath of office in Abuja alongside Désiré Henri Aihou of Benin, Awa Bah of The Gambia, Charlyne M. Brumskine of Liberia and Yaouza Ouro-Sama of Togo.

The judges were sworn in by Senegalese President and ECOWAS Chairman, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who charged them to uphold impartiality, integrity and justice in the discharge of their duties.

Another moment to celebrate an Igbo woman taking her place at a major institution serving West Africa.

20 Abducted NYSC Members Rescued In Imo.

The victims were abducted on October 1 after gunmen attacked two buses travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom. Ten victims were initially rescued at the scene, while the remaining 20 were taken into the bush.

The rescue followed a joint operation involving the DSS, military and police. The victims are currently receiving medical attention at a DSS facility in Owerri.

The development comes days after the abductors reportedly demanded a ₦1 billion ransom from the victims’ families. Security agencies had also located the kidnappers’ camp using drones but delayed an assault after intelligence indicated that the area had been planted with explosives.

The corps members are currently receiving medical attention at a DSS facility in Imo State.

On October 7, 1967, hundreds of men and boys were killed in Asaba, Delta State, during the Nigerian Civil War.

The victims had gathered in white, singing and chanting “One Nigeria,” believing they were showing support for peace. Instead, they were separated from their families and executed.

The Asaba Massacre remains one of the darkest chapters of Nigeria’s Civil War — a painful history that must be remembered, documented and taught to future generations.

More than half a century later, Asaba remembers.
