Today, the Hon. Justice Innocent Umezulike Foundation celebrates NNIMMO BASSEY, a Nigerian architect, environmentalist, author, and internationally recognised voice in the struggle for environmental justice.
WHEN ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION BECOMES A HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE
For communities in the Niger Delta, oil pollution is not merely an environmental concern. It threatens livelihoods, damages ecosystems, and raises fundamental questions about corporate responsibility, human dignity, and the protection of vulnerable populations. For decades, Bassey has worked at the intersection of these concerns, insisting that the consequences of resource extraction cannot be separated from the rights of the people who bear its costs.
FROM LOCAL STRUGGLES TO GLOBAL RECOGNITION
His contributions have extended beyond Nigeria:
• Building an Environmental Movement: In 1993, he co-founded Environmental Rights Action, helping establish a platform for confronting environmental abuses and defending affected communities.
• International Leadership: As Chair of Friends of the Earth International from 2008 to 2012, he brought experience from Nigeria into a wider global movement for environmental protection.
• Recognition for Courageous Work: In 2010, he received the Right Livelihood Award for exposing the human and ecological consequences of oil production and strengthening environmental advocacy in Nigeria and internationally.
• Sustaining the Work: As Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation, he continues to advance ecological justice and food sovereignty.
Nnimmo Bassey’s work reminds us that environmental protection is not separate from justice. Where communities bear the cost of economic activity, their rights, dignity, and voices must remain central to the conversation.
