INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL 2025
“The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis”
October 11, 2025

Today, Fearless Girls Initiative stands with girls across the world to celebrate who they are and the powerful change they lead. The United Nations theme for 2025 calls us to see girls not as passive victims of crisis, but as active leaders shaping solutions.

The “frontlines of crisis” are many: in conflict zones, communities hit by climate events, or places where poverty, stigma, and lack of opportunity disproportionately affect girls. Yet, in the midst of these challenges, girls are organizing, demanding justice, teaching others, and rebuilding their worlds.

At Fearless Girls Initiative, we believe that girls’ empowerment must include menstrual equity. Why? Because: when girls lack safe, affordable menstrual products, they often miss school or hide in shame.

Period poverty doesn’t just harm their bodies, it erodes their confidence, dignity, and future. True leadership means ensuring every girl can manage her body with safety, comfort, and pride, without fear or silence.

That is why, today, in the commemoration program, we selected and empowered Menstrual Health Ambassadors. These are girls who will embody the mission of ending period poverty, opening safe conversations, educating peers, and helping sustain knowledge long beyond one event.

By choosing ambassadors, we are not merely recognizing leadership, we’re investing in it, especially in a domain where girls’ voices are too often silenced. Every girl is a leader not because she holds a title, but because of her ability to respond, to speak, to heal, and to lift others.

Menstrual health is not a girls’ issue, it’s a human rights issue. When we invest in safe, dignified menstrual care, we invest in girls’ bodies, minds, and futures.

Ambassadors are change agents. They stand in their own schools, among their peers, carrying a vision: “I am the change I lead.”

Today, as we celebrate, we call on every parent, teacher, policymaker, and community leader to listen to girls not just for their needs, but for their ideas, solutions, and leadership.

Today, we celebrate not just our nation’s 65 years of independence, but also the strength, resilience, and potential of every Nigerian especially our girls. At Fearless Girls Initiative, we believe that true freedom is not only about history but about the future we are building.

A future where every girl has access to education, where her voice is heard, where her dreams are valid, and where her contributions shape our nation.

As we honour our past and reflect on the journey ahead, may we continue to work towards a Nigeria where equality, justice, and opportunity are realities for all. Because when we invest in girls, we invest in the progress of our nation.

Last week, we discussed "𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽...𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀” 💪🏾

Inside our WhatsApp-based learning space, our Fearless Girls explored what it really means to be a leader. We talked about how leadership is not about being the loudest or the most popular, but about using your voice, taking responsibility, and lifting others up.

From identifying leadership qualities like confidence, empathy, integrity, and vision to reflecting on how they lead in their homes, schools, and peer groups. The girls showed us that you don’t have to wait to be an adult to lead.

Through storytelling, reflection questions, and activities, they began to see that:

✅ Leadership starts with self-belief.

✅ Every girl has something unique to offer.

✅ Girls can lead change in their communities.

Here’s what one of our girls said:

“I now know that leadership is not about controlling others. It’s about helping others and being a good example.”

Last week in the Fearless Girls Digital Hub (She Speaks Room), our amazing girls learned two life changing topics every girl deserves to understand:

🧼 1. Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)
We talked about how to stay clean, safe, and confident during your period.

The girls learned:
✅ How often to change a pad

✅ How to wash and care for reusable pads

✅ Why clean hands = a healthy body

✅ What products to use and how to dispose of them safely

✅ That managing your period with dignity is your right, not a luxury

🩸 2. Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

It’s more than just bleeding. We explored the 4 key phases of a girl’s monthly cycle:

1️⃣ Menstrual Phase – When the bleeding happens
2️⃣ Follicular Phase – The body prepares to release an egg
3️⃣ Ovulation – Around day 14, the egg is released
4️⃣ Luteal Phase – The final days before the next period begins

The girls also started tracking their own cycles and learning to read the signs their bodies give them. 💡

🌟 At the Fearless Girls Digital Hub, we’re breaking the silence, ending the shame, and replacing confusion with confidence, truth, and sisterhood. 💪🏽💜

This week, we’re building on that with a powerful new theme:

At Fearless Girls Initiative, we’ve spent over 6 years championing menstrual equity across communities. We've educated more than 50,000 girls on menstruation and menstrual hygiene management, built leadership and self-esteem skills, and trained over 3,000 girls to make their own reusable sanitary pads. Through cross-border projects, we’ve also empowered women with the skills and tools to start and scale small businesses focused on reusable pad production, bridging the gap between menstrual health and economic opportunity.

But we asked ourselves a new question:

* Too many girls still feel shame about their periods.
* Too many are left behind during holidays.
* Too many don’t have spaces to ask questions without fear.

We’re building this hub so no girl is left out of the conversation, no matter where she is.
