In international law, the right to self-defence is protected under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which affirms the inherent right of individuals and nations to defend themselves against attack. Likewise, many national legal systems uphold this principle — for example, Section 32(3) of the Nigerian Criminal Code provides that a person is not criminally responsible when using reasonably necessary force to defend their life or prevent grievous harm.
