Democracy thrives when citizens have the knowledge, platforms, and opportunity to influence the decisions that shape their lives.

At South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO), our governance work focuses on strengthening accountability systems, expanding civic participation, and creating spaces where citizens can engage duty bearers and demand responsive governance.

Through initiatives such as the Local Governnment Accountability Index project (LAI), youth governance programmes, tax justice advocacy, voter education campaigns, climate governance engagements, and support for policy development processes, we have worked alongside communities, government institutions, and civil society actors to promote transparency, participation, and accountability.

We have supported the development of key policies, including the Enugu State Youth Policy, Climate Change Policy, and Women’s Economic Empowerment Policy, while also strengthening citizen oversight of public commitments and service delivery.

As we commemorate Democracy Day, we are reminded that democracy extends beyond the ballot box. It requires active citizens, accountable institutions, and systems that ensure every voice can contribute to shaping the future.

Happy Democracy Day.

At SSDO, we believe that improving outcomes for girls requires practical knowledge, skills, and peer-led support systems that can be sustained within schools and communities.

As Technical Partners for the Iwollo Period Dignity Project, SSDO supported a Training of Trainers programme for 50 secondary school students drawn from four schools in Iwollo, Enugu State.

The intervention focused on menstrual hygiene management and practical reusable sanitary pad production.

Through interactive sessions and hands-on group exercises with our facilitators, Obianuju Ezeike (PMD Pro, BPH), Favour Kalu (PMD Pro, B.Mcb), and Hannah Okugo, participants gained knowledge on menstrual health, hygiene practices, and low-cost menstrual products that can improve access and dignity for girls.

Beyond the training itself, the students were equipped as Menstrual Hygiene Champions, with the responsibility of stepping down the knowledge and skills acquired to their peers within their respective schools.

This approach creates a multiplier effect, ensuring that accurate information, healthy practices, and practical solutions continue to reach more young people long after the training has ended.

We commend Corps Member, Osawemen Miracle Ronke, for identifying a critical need within the community and bringing together stakeholders to deliver a sustainable intervention that promotes health, dignity, and leadership among adolescent girls.

What does climate change have to do with the cost of food, transport fares, or the daily hustle to earn a living?

More than many of us realize.

Across Nigeria, climate change is increasingly influencing livelihoods, entrepreneurship, local economies, and the cost of everyday survival.

This World Environment Day, SSDO invites you to join a timely conversation:

🌍 "Climate Wahala: Jobs, Hustle and Survival in Nigeria's Changing Cities".

The webinar will explore how climate change is reshaping jobs, livelihoods, food systems, and informal economies, while highlighting opportunities for resilience, adaptation, and youth engagement in a changing climate landscape.

The conversation highlighted the role of individuals, communities, institutions, and policymakers in safeguarding our environment and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

At SSDO, we believe that lasting change begins with awareness, collaboration, and action. Through our programmes and partnerships, we remain committed to advancing climate justice, environmental sustainability, and community-led development across Nigeria.

We appreciate Udoka FM 100.3 for providing a platform to amplify these important conversations and thank everyone who continues to champion a greener and more sustainable world.
