The trainers broke down the importance of skill acquisition and punishment as a means of behaviour reduction.

We are indeed grateful to our trainers for laying emphasis on what parents, guardians and caregivers news to know. Punishment is NOT about beating the child as is the norm.

The training ended with questions and answers, addressing of parent’s worries, shedding tears of relief and vote of thanks.

Recently in Enugu, we brought families and caregivers together for a 4-day training focused on something we deeply believe in.

Too often, what we know about autism comes from misconceptions rather than facts. That’s why Shades of Life Foundation, in collaboration with Soin Jeff Foundation and The Children’s Learning Centre and Resource Hub, created a space where parents and caregivers could learn.

Day 1 was about asking questions, sharing experiences, and unlearning, where Dr Eziafakaku Nwokolo, founder of Shades of Life Foundation, opened the conversation by sharing both her professional experience in Behaviour Analysis and her personal journey as a mother of a child on the spectrum. Together, we explored ASD, Intellectual Disability and ADHD, how they differ, and how they can co-occur, to better understand the autistic brain.

Day 2 was about hands-on learning, as parents and caregivers explored preference assessments, data collection, and behaviour measurement using everyday examples. Miss Christabel from Soin Jeff Foundation and Ms Nneka, founder of The Children’s Learning Centre and Resource Hub, guided the sessions with clarity.

We began looking beyond the behaviour and asking, Why is this behaviour happening? Through the ABC model: Antecedent, Behaviour, and Consequence, families learned that behaviour doesn’t just happen. Slowly, parents began to understand how they could help.

If l eat this, will my child be autistic ?

No ma. Please eat your food in peace.

Autism is not caused by food seasoning, it isn't caused by what a pregnant woman eats.
There are other disabilities that things like street drugs, certain medications and alcohol consumption can impact.

Let pregnant women enjoy their meals and eat well in peace.

After a week of training, we asked: "What does evidence-based mean?"
One answered: "You video what you did and send it to the family." 🧐🙆🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️‍➡️

While that’s some form of ‘evidence’, evidence-based doesn't mean showing someone proof of what you did. 😊😎

It means using techniques that have actually been tested and proven through research, not just documented, but studied.
That's what ABA is built on. Decades of research applied across autism care, sports, health, even weight management and not guesswork.

Sending a video isn't evidence-based practice.
Using methods backed by research is.

Ride for Autism has taken us beyond the usual routes, across cities, towns and borders.

This year, we rode from Lagos to Benin Republic and back, meeting new people and, most importantly, sparking small moments of curiosity in the minds of people who may never have stopped to think about autism.

Because sometimes, all it takes is seeing a bicycle go by with a cyclists wearing a jersey with “Ride4Autism” written across the back to make someone wonder, what is autism?

And that curiosity gives us a chance to talk, educate and build awareness. To challenge misconceptions and remind people that autism is not a death sentence.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a proven, approved technique for supporting individuals living with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities, and we're passionate about putting that knowledge in the right hands.

At Shades of Life Foundation, we train:
Parents, to confidently care for and support their children at home

Teachers, with practical techniques for inclusive classrooms

Medical practitioners, to recognise early signs and respond as true first responders for people living with intellectual disabilities

Every training is an investment in a life. That's why our programmes can be sponsored by individuals, government bodies, or corporate donations, because when we come together, we build a more informed, more compassionate community.

You don't have to be an expert to make a difference. You just have to start.

Shades of Life Foundation.

On the 7th of August, we wrapped up an ABA training session with a select group of special needs educators, medical practitioners, and teachers in Abia State, sponsored by the state government through the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of the Disabled Persons.
Here's what one of the participants had to say after the training.
