Speech by the Convener on International Widows Day
Theme: “Uplifting Widows – Restoring Dignity, Securing Hope”
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,
It is both an honour and a profound responsibility to stand before you today as the convener of this special gathering to commemorate International Widows Day.
Every 23rd of June, the world pauses to recognize a group of women who are often forgotten in silence – widows. This day is not just a date on the calendar; it is a call to action. It is a moment to bring visibility to the struggles of widows, to amplify their voices, and to reaffirm our commitment to justice, equity, and human dignity.
Widowhood, especially in many parts of our society, is not only a time of mourning but often a period marked by rejection, stigma, poverty, and abuse. Many widows are denied their rights to inheritance, subjected to degrading traditional practices, or left without support systems. These are not just cultural issues – they are human rights issues.
Today, we say: Enough is enough.
Widows deserve more than survival. They deserve the opportunity to rebuild their lives, support their families, and contribute meaningfully to society – because they are strong, capable, and resilient.
That is why we are gathered here. Not only to speak but to act. As a community, as a church, as a nation, and as human beings – we must be intentional in creating structures that protect, empower, and support widows.
To every widow here today and those we stand in solidarity with around the world: You are seen. You are heard. You matter. Your pain is real, but so is your strength. Your journey is difficult, but so is your resilience. And today, we celebrate you not as victims, but as survivors, as pillars of strength, and as women who deserve a future filled with dignity and hope.
As a foundation and as conveners, we will continue to advocate, to support, and to create safe spaces where widows can find healing, empowerment, and opportunity.
Let this International Widows Day not just be a remembrance, but a renewal of our commitment to social justice and compassion.
Together, let’s lift up widows – not with pity, but with partnership.
Thank you, and may God bless you all.
