Don’t let money decide your friends

Don’t let it make you feel better than people

Learn to make money, manage money, save money, spend wisely and give, but never let money tell you who you are.

Where everyone is fighting to prove a point, choose peace, even when you could win the argument.

Peace is not weakness
It is strength under control

Spending money on something suddenly because you feel like having it right now, without really thinking about whether you need it or can afford it, that’s impulse buying.

Impulse buying may make you feel good at the time. But later, you may be asking:

“Why did I buy this?”
“I should have saved that money.”
“Now I don’t have enough for what I actually need.”

Dear Teen, learn to delay the excitement.

Sometimes just put it down, close the app, walk away, then give yourself time.

If you still want it after thinking about it and it fits your plan then you can decide.

Because when you stop buying everything that catches your eye:

You save more
You reach your goals faster
You make wiser decisions
You have fewer money regrets
And you become more disciplined with money.

You don’t have to prove you can afford something by buying it.

If you can solve problems, create something useful, develop a skill, help people, think differently, and make yourself useful, you become a magnet for opportunities. 🧲

Do away with entitlement

Nobody owes you success simply because you want it.

Enrich yourself first:
Read
Learn
Build skills
Develop character
Solve problems
Become trustworthy
Create value

For now, stop, “How can I make money?”

Ask: “What value can I bring?”

Because when you become valuable, profit has something to follow.

Build the value, let the value attract the opportunity and let the opportunity produce the profit.

TEENS & MONEY SERIES: POCKET MONEY MANAGEMENT

A new school session is here, and for many teenagers, that means pocket money will be coming in regularly again.

Do you have a plan for your pocket money?

Here are a few things to try:

PLAN YOUR SCHOOL EXPENSES: Know the things you are likely to spend money on: transport, food, stationery, data, contributions and other school needs.

DON’T SPEND EVERYTHING YOU RECEIVE: If you receive ₦5,000, you don’t have to find a way to spend ₦5,000. Keep something aside.

WATCH THE “SMALL SMALL” SPENDING: That snack, that drink, that extra purchase during break, they may look small, but small spending can become big spending when repeated every day.

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR MONEY: You don’t need a complicated app. A simple note on your phone or a small notebook can help you see where your money is going.

DON’T LET FRIENDS PLAN YOUR MONEY FOR YOU: Your friend may have ₦20,000 to spend. You may have ₦5,000. You don’t have to spend like someone else to belong.

SET A MONEY GOAL FOR THE SESSION: Maybe you want to save towards something important, learn a new skill or have some money available for an unexpected need.

Financial responsibility is part of life, this is your opportunity to learn how to manage money.

TEENS & MONEY SERIES: BUILD BEFORE YOU SPEND

You just received some money and your first thought is: “What can I buy?”

As a teenager, every little money you receive is an opportunity to do more than just spend.

You can:

Invest in your knowledge: books, courses, skills and learning.

Invest in a skill: graphic design, coding, content creation, baking, photography… something that can become valuable.

Save towards a goal: give your money a purpose instead of letting it disappear.

Start something small; even a simple business or project can teach you valuable lessons about money.

Give: generosity is also part of financial responsibility.

This doesn’t mean you can never enjoy your money. Enjoy some, save some, build something with some.

If all you ever do with money is consume, you may always need more money.

But when you learn to build, your money can help you create opportunities.

Next time money comes into your hands, pause before you spend it and ask: “What can this money help me build?”
