In our world today, there's often a mix-up between being nice and being good. While being nice might seem pleasant, it often comes at a high cost—our peace, our energy, and sometimes even our integrity. Niceness can lead us to say “yes” when we really want to say “no,” to avoid conflict at all costs, and to prioritize others' comfort over our own well-being. This can be draining, leaving us stressed, exhausted, and, eventually, burnt out.
Being a good person, on the other hand, means acting with kindness and compassion, but also with honesty and firmness. It’s about making choices that align with our values, even when those choices aren’t popular or easy. Goodness is rooted in doing what’s right, not just what’s easy. It allows us to set healthy boundaries, stand up for ourselves and others, and live with authenticity and purpose.
At the Bassey Andah Foundation, we believe in nurturing goodness over niceness. We encourage everyone to focus on being good humans—compassionate yet strong, kind yet firm, and always true to their core values.
