As we look to mark the International Day of Education tomorrow, we celebrate the life of an amazing educationalist - Grace Udua - who our co-founder, Gary Foxcroft, was blessed to meet back in 2003 whilst carrying out his Masters research in Nigeria.

Grace's kindness was the driving force in the establishment of the Stepping Stones School where she served as Head Teacher for the last 20 years before retiring this year.

Leadership is one of the most powerful drivers of quality education—second only to teaching itself. Strong leaders shape vision, inspire teachers, and create environments where children can truly thrive. Grace was one of the strongest leaders one could imagine and a true teacher in every sense of the word.

As the world reflects on the importance of educational leadership, we celebrate someone who embodies this truth.

Grace’s leadership was never about titles. It was about kindness, consistency, and a belief in every child’s ability to learn. Her love for education didn’t just transform the many schools she worked in — it helped inspire the growth of the Jolly Phonics programme across Nigeria, now the largest literacy project in Africa.

As Grace retires this year, we honour a life of service, quiet excellence, and transformational leadership.

Thank you, Grace, for showing us what true educational leadership looks like. Your impact will be felt for generations.

Safe Child Africa was proud to have supported the colourful carnival parade in Cross River State recently where the streets of Calabar became more than a stage for celebration, they were a platform for justice.

Leading the charge, as ever, we are amazing friends and partners at Basic Rights Counsel Initiative. Check out the photos of founders, Barrister James Ibor and Ese Ibor below. How iconic are they?

This is all part of Safe Child Africa's ongoing efforts to look to address the root causes of child abuse and help ensure that all children are protected from harm and able to access their wider rights.

Thanks to all of our for making this possible 🙏🫶

Human Rights Day 2025

Today, 10 December is the International Day of Human Rights and we are reaffirming our mission to defend and advocate for the rights of the children we serve. And that will never change.

Human Rights might seem like and abstract concept, but they affect every aspect of our lives.

What is essential to you and how does that affect your life?
What are the things that everyone should have?
Tell us here and let's send a strong message that Human Rights affect everyone and are for everyone!

About Today

How does advocacy work? In our experience: over time.

One of the most important aspects of our work is in communities in Nigeria, where witchcraft beliefs are still common.

This article explores a typical day for the skilled and courageous workers of our PACT Project - Prevent Abuse of Children Today.

It seems so simple, right? And yet even today, children in Nigeria suffer horrific forms of abuse. Sometimes, nobody says a word.

A fundamental aspect of our mission is making sure this silence is broken, so that these children do not become invisible and abandoned in their communities.

We need the neighbour to notice.
We need the kind market stall holder to see the homeless child.
We need the person driving by to stop and help.

The same goes for those of us who are not nearby. Please don't look away.

This festive season, we are asking our followers to share our message with at least one more person (and if you can, more people) who might be able to make a small monthly donation to help bring these cruel practices to an end.

Your money goes straight to the front line work; 96p out of every pound.

That way, we, along with our excellent partners, can be there to help, both now and in the future.

Please hit share and let your friends and followers know why this matters to you.

THANK YOU.

20 November 2025 World Children's Day

For 20 years, Safe Child Africa has championed the rights of children in some of the most challenging places in the world. A mission that began when our founder happened upon two children at the side of the road, saw their suffering and heard their voices.

With our partners, we rescue, house, heal, and though education, offer a brighter future to children, who through no fault of their own, have suffered some of the most terrible forms of abuse imaginable – child witchcraft accusations, r**e, trafficking and torture.

Our belief in the power of advocacy to help keep vulnerable children safe and protected is at the core of Safe Child Africa's mission.

Listen to the future. Stand up for children’s rights.

World Children’s Day is UNICEF global day of action for children, by children, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

"Child rights are human rights. They are non-negotiable and universal. But in too many places today children’s rights are being misunderstood, disregarded or even denied and attacked.

Upholding children’s rights is the compass to a better world – today, tomorrow and into the future."

Join us in our mission to protect child rights and make this suffering a thing of the past.

Safe Child Africa regretfully reports this awful abuse of three children in Bayelsa Nigeria.

As the article explains, most cases are never officially reported and just a tiny fraction of cases reported are ever investigated fully, so the perpetrators go unpunished.

"Under Nigerian Law, there are provisions, including the Child Rights Act, to prosecute and punish parents who abuse their children in the name of witchcraft."

As always, Safe Child Africa will be working with our partners Advocacy For Alleged Witches-AFAW and Dr Leo Igwe to campaign for justice for these innocent children and to educate communities where this is still happening.

Let's stand together to make sure perpetrators are punished for this sickening abuse.

“In the coming days and weeks, Advocacy For Alleged Witches-AFAW will work with FIDA, NHRC, and other agencies in Bayelsa to educate and enlighten witchcraft believers and support these children and other victims of witch hunts in the state.”
