AWA Initiative joined the National Coalition to End Child Marriage in Nigeria to commemorate the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, reaffirming the need to protect girls from child marriage and create an environment where they can learn, grow, and make decisions about their futures.

Ending child marriage goes beyond keeping girls out of early unions. It means keeping them in school, protecting their rights, amplifying their voices, and giving them the opportunities to become who they aspire to be.

Because every girl deserves a childhood to live, an education to grow, and a future to choose. 💙🧡

Girls' Power Initiative (GPI) Calabar joins the world to celebrate the strength, brilliance and limitless potential of every girl child.
We celebrate progress today with over 68 million child marriages have been averted in 25 years. Yet it remains incomplete, In Nigeria, 1 in 3 girls is married before 18, with rates over 50% in the North West and North East (2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey; UNICEF analysis of the 2024 NDHS for northern Nigeria).
As we mark this day with the theme "End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls' Rights", we insist that celebration must translate to action.
We call on all stakeholders to:
Invest in girls' education, health and social protection.
End harmful practices - no culture justifies child abuse.
Enforce the Child Rights Law across all 36 states.
To our partners, thank you for standing with us.
To every girl child: You are unique, powerful, and celebrated. Your rights are non-negotiable.
