Nigeria amalgamation ceremony. Zungeru, January 13th, 1914; The six Nigerians that signed the amalgamation document.

Many Nigerians have asked if there were parties from the southern and northern Protectorate that partook in the declaration of Nigeria, or did the British on their own sign the document in the absence of the people involved?

Southern and Northern Protectorate were joined to form Nigeria in 1914. By then the nationalist we know of now were still little to know what happened. Nnamdi Azikiwe was only 10 years old, Ahmadu Bello was 4 years, Awolowo was 5 years then. Which Nigerian signed the Amalgamation document?

There were only 28 individuals involved in the forceful Amalgamation of the South and the North Protectorate. Out of the 28, only 6 were Nigerians. The rest were all British citizens. Lord lugard the first governor general led the Amalgamation (he was one the one to propose it first) and the final signature was his (Sir Kitoyi Ajasa).

The six Nigerians were;

1. HRH Maiturare Sarkin Mussulumi and Sultan of Sokoto

2. Usuman Dan Maje who later became Emir of Kano

3. Sir Kitoyi Ajasa a lawyer

4. HRH Oladugbolu Alaafin of Oyo

5. HRH R Henshaw (Obong of Calabar)

6. Abubakar Shehu of Borno

These are the Nigerians present at the amalgamation. They were there ceremoniously. From the names above, you would notice that no Igbo man was present in the amalgamation of Nigeria despite the Igbos having powerful leaders like the Obi Okosi of Onitsha, Eze Nri òbalíke etc The reason is not far-fetched. The Igbos fought strongly against the British rule and they were never in support of their systems. Lagos colony was also against the amalgamation as at then.

The British were more comfortable to deal with Fulani/Northerners. The reason there were more fulani/northerners during the amalgamation. Some believe this is the beginning of the Nigeria problem.

REMARK BY COMR. OLUSHOLA OLADOJA, PRESIDENT, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS), AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 2025 NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES GAMES (NUGA) HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF JOS, PLATEAU STATE

8th November, 2025
Venue: Multipurpose Sports Arena, University of Jos, Plateau State

Protocol:

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos , The chief host.
The Executive Governor of Plateau State;
The Executive Governor of Ondo State;
The Hon. Minister of Education;
The Hon. Minister of Youth
The chairman, National Sports Commission;
Members of the NUGA Council;
Distinguished Vice-Chancellors and Heads of Delegations;
Our gallant athletes and officials;
Students of the great Nigerian universities;
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen

It is with great joy, patriotic pride, and a deep sense of responsibility that I, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), stand before you today to deliver this goodwill remark at the Opening Ceremony of the 2025 Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA), hosted by the prestigious University of Jos, Plateau State.

This year’s edition of the Games represents not just another gathering of athletes and scholars, but a celebration of unity, excellence, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of the Nigerian student. The Nigerian Universities Games have, since inception, been a cradle of national integration — nurturing talents, promoting sportsmanship, and advancing the cause of peace and friendship across our campuses and our nation.

Distinguished guests, it is important to highlight that the University of Jos holds a special place in Nigeria’s educational landscape. Beyond its commitment to academic and athletic excellence, this institution proudly doubles as the National Secretariat of both the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). This remarkable coincidence underscores the university’s unique position as the intellectual and activist heartbeat of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

Indeed, both the ASUU National President and the NANS National President proudly hail from this same great institution — a testament to the University of Jos as a fertile ground for leadership, integrity, and the fearless pursuit of justice and progress within the Nigerian education sector.

As we officially declare the 2025 NUGA Games open, I charge every athlete to compete with the highest level of discipline, sportsmanship, and respect for rules. Remember that your performance here is not only a quest for medals but also a demonstration of the values and unity that Nigerian students stand for.

To the host university, the Organizing Committee, and the leadership of NUGA, I salute your tireless efforts in ensuring a successful and memorable event. The resilience and hospitality of the people of Plateau State remind us that peace, progress, and partnership are possible when Nigerians work together with sincerity of purpose.

On behalf of over 40 million Nigerian students, I reaffirm NANS’ commitment to the promotion of youth development, campus harmony, and the continuous defense of quality education for all. Together, through sports and scholarship, we shall continue to uphold the banner of unity and progress for our great nation.

Let the games begin, and may the spirit of friendship and excellence prevail.

Long live NUGA!
Long live the University of Jos!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

*ABDUCTION OF STUDENTS AND KILLING OF VICE PRINCIPAL ON INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ DAY: WE ARE BROKEN*

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is deeply shattered and unconsolably heartbroken by the devastating news of the attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, where armed assailants invaded the school premises at dawn, brutally killed the Vice Principal, Mr. Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and abducted 25 innocent female students.

The tragic incident, which happened yesterday 17th November, 2025, a day globally dedicated to celebrating 'International Students' Day', set aside for the celebration of students' resilience, and the future they represent, has broken us beyond measure.

As the apex students' body in Nigeria, we had meticulously designed the 2025 International Students Day Celebration as a moment of honor, hope, and academic excellence—never imagining it would be overshadowed by such darkness.

For this year’s event, NANS planned special national recognitions and awards for excellent student performance, including:

100,000 cash prize award for 10 best students in each faculty of the University of Abuja

A laptop prize for best performing students in the 2025 WAEC, NECO, and JAMB examinations

A ₦200,000 cash award for the Nigerian student who emerged winner of the TeenEagle International English Language Competition

Additional excellence recognitions for students who have shown outstanding leadership and innovation among others.

Yesterday, instead of celebration, the Nigerian student community was thrown into yet another panic.

The abduction of these young girls has reopened deep wounds in our national memory. We recall with pain the past tragedies:

The mass kidnapping of schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State (2014)

Recurrent student abductions in Katsina, Niger, Yobe and Kaduna States, including the mass kidnapping in Kuriga, Kagara, Dapchi where scores of school children were taken

The growing pattern of targeting schools across Northern Nigeria

These incidents collectively underscore the urgent need for robust preventive security strategies, rather than the usual reactive measures deployed only after lives have been destroyed and families shattered. Our schools must never be playgrounds for terrorists; our daughters must never again be turned into bargaining chips in the hands of criminals.

NANS, therefore:

1. Condemns this act of terror in the strongest possible terms.

2. Appeals to the Federal Government, Kebbi State Government, and Nigeria’s entire security architecture to deploy every available resource to ensure the immediate rescue of the abducted students.

3. Demands high end proactive security measures around all schools, especially girls’ boarding institutions.

4. Calls for intelligence driven operations that dismantle the criminal networks, enabling these mass abductions.

Students—especially female students—must never be targets of terror. We can not continue to allow young girls to be used as negotiation tools in the battle between the state and criminal elements. Enough is enough.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the slain Vice Principal, Mr. Hassan Yakubu Makuku, whose bravery in resisting the attackers, cost him his life. We also pray for the swift recovery of the injured staff member. Our hearts go out to the parents and families of the kidnapped students—we stand with you, we are as saddened as you are, and we join our voices in prayer for their safe, secure, and unharmed return.

On this International Students Day, instead of celebration, we stand united in grief, in solidarity, and in our collective resolve to protect every Nigerian student.

Signed:

'He forced my head until his manh00d entered my mouth': Full testimony that jailed Prof. Ndifon, UNICAL ex-law dean for 5 years.. 👇🏾

The conviction of Prof. Ndifon followed the harrowing testimony of a diploma student with name withheld, who detailed repeated se×ual assau|t and explo!tation.

The judgement, delivered on Monday, came in a case prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)...

Ndifon had earlier been suspended after female students staged a protest accusing him of se×ua| ha√assment.

Below are verbatim excerpts from the student testimony that the judge quoted extensively in the judgment:

“He asked me to lock the door… He came close, held my wrist, tried to remove my trousers. I held his hand and begged him that I was on my per!od. He said it was a lie, put his hand inside my pr!vate part… Then he brought out his pen!$ and told me to give him 0ra| se×. I refused. I was crying. I knelt down and begged him, saying I would give him my v!rg!n!ty but not that day. He kept forcing his pen!$ into my mouth. I crawled around the office on the floor while he followed me, trying to force it in.”

He told me not to bother about admission if I could only take in the cap of his pen!$.”

“He came to my hostel in his car… While inside the car he brought out his pen!$ again and asked me to give him a blow job. I begged him. He tried to put his hand in my trousers again. I told him I was on my period. He bent my head by force until the p***s ended up in my mouth.

Afterwards he apologised, told me to wipe my tears, and later sent me N3,000 to treat my neck.”

He kept pressuring me to send a video of me putting two fingers in my pr!v@te part. I told him I was a v!rg!n and couldn’t do that, but he insisted.

Out of fear of missing admission, I sent it… Later he asked for a full n**e video from my chin down to my pr!v@te part. I sent it in ‘view-once’ format. He claimed he mistakenly deleted it and asked me to resend.”

Prof. Ndifon was convicted on Counts 1 and 2 (Cybercrime Act & ICPC Act violations) and sentenced to five years without option of fine...

SENATE CALLS FOR 100,000 ADDITIONAL MILITARY RECRUITMENT TO COMBAT INSECURITY

The senate is urging Nigeria's Armed Forces to immediate recruit at least 100,000 personnel to tackle insecurity in parts of the country.

It is also to set up an adhoc committee to look into the funding, expenditure and outcome of the safe school programme.

These and other resolutions were adopted following a motion on the Monday's abduction of 25 students of Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi state.

Senate strongly condemns the heinous act and sympathise with families of the victims.
The Senate also mourns the murder of Brigadier General Uba and other military personnel in Borno State.
