Promoting Hand Hygiene, Protecting Lives in Dikwa, Borno State!

Clean hands are a powerful defence against preventable diseases. In marking Global Handwashing Day, We engaged community members in Dikwa, Borno State, to raise awareness of the importance of washing hands properly with soap and clean water.

Through practical demonstrations, community members were encouraged to embrace good handwashing practices at home and in their daily activities, helping to safeguard children, families and the wider community from infections.

A simple act can make a lasting difference. By making handwashing a daily habit, we can build healthier families and safer communities.

Why are clean hands still important...
Proper handwashing with soap and clean water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of diseases and protect our communities.

This Global Handwashing Day, We encourage everyone to make handwashing with soap a regular habit at critical moments, especially after using the toilet, before preparing or eating food, and after caring for someone who is ill.

The 5 Steps of Handwashing

• Wet: Wet your hands with clean, running water and apply soap.
• Lather: Rub your hands together with soap to lather the backs, between your fingers, and under your nails.
• Scrub: Scrub your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds (about humming the "Happy Birthday" song twice).
• Rinse: Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
• Dry: Dry your hands using a clean towel or an air dryer. (Avoid drying on clothing, which can reintroduce germs).

Critical Moments to Wash Hands

• After using the toilet or changing diapers
• Before, during, and after preparing or eating food
• After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
• After caring for someone who is ill
• After touching garbage, animals, or animal waste

• Reduces the risk of diarrheal diseases significantly
• Lowers acute respiratory and seasonal coronavirus infections
• Helps limit the spread of outbreaks like cholera, typhoid, and antimicrobial-resistant "superbugs"
• Can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available

On World Mental Health Day, observed Yesterday been the 10th of October, we are reminded that every smile, has a story that deserves to be heard, understood, and supported.

This year’s theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Changes,” calls on us to create safe spaces where people can share their experiences without fear of judgment, stigma, or discrimination.

Mental health matters every day. A listening ear, a kind word, and access to appropriate support can make a meaningful difference. Let us replace stigma with understanding, silence with conversations, and judgment with compassion.

We advocate for accessible mental health services, an end to stigma and discrimination, and a society where every lived experience is heard, valued, and translated into real change.

Raising awareness. Promoting informed choices. Supporting healthier families.

In commemoration of World Contraception Day, we joined other organizations across Borno State for a road walk held in Maiduguri to engage communities and promote awareness on contraception and family planning.

The campaign focused on ensuring that individuals and couples have access to reliable information and are empowered to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

We are creating communities where people are informed, empowered, and able to make choices that support their health and well-being.

Last week, GREENCODE, in partnership with the Norwegian Church Aid Nigeria - NCA and with funding from the Norad, conducted a Flood and Fire Committee Training under the Climate and Environmental Stewardship (CES) activities in Dikwa, Borno State.

The two-day training, held on 25–26 September 2026 at the UNICEF Safe Space, equipped community members with practical knowledge to better prepare for, prevent, and respond to flood and fire emergencies.

Through strengthened community preparedness and environmental stewardship, we can build safer, more resilient communities capable of responding effectively to climate-related risks.

Yesterday, GREENCODE Board and Management successfully concluded its Project Management Training, a capacity-building initiative designed for staff, volunteers, and younger NGOs/CBOs.

The hybrid training brought participants together in person at the GREENCODE offices in Maiduguri and Calabar, as well as virtually via Microsoft Teams.

The session provided an opportunity for participants to strengthen their knowledge and practical understanding of project management, planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring, and effective delivery of project results.

We are always committed to strengthening the capacity of staff, volunteers, and emerging civil society organisations to improve the quality, effectiveness, and sustainability of development and humanitarian interventions.

A big thank you to all participants, facilitator, and partners who contributed to the success of the training.

Handover of Women and Girls’ Safe Spaces

Today, GREENCODE officially handed over six Women and Girls’ Safe Spaces and their facilities and assets to community stakeholders across Bama, Konduga and Jere LGAs of Borno State.

The handover marks an important step towards strengthening community ownership and sustaining safe, inclusive spaces where women and girls can access protection, support and essential services.

Implemented in partnership with CBM UK and funded by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), the initiative reflects the power of collaboration in promoting dignity, safety and resilience within communities.
