When schools are attacked, girls lose more than classrooms. Insecurity can push them closer to school dropout, child marriage, and teenage pregnancy. Protecting education means protecting girls' rights, choices, and futures.

We are calling on the Nigerian Government to strengthen school safety and protect every child's right to learn.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are 93 births for every 1,000 girls aged 15–19. UNFPA also reports that 9 in 10 pregnancies among girls under 18 happen within marriage.

So yes, we must tackle the big issues: child marriage, poverty, abuse, poor access to education, and weak protection systems.

But while we work to end them, one question remains:

Who helps the girl already affected to return to school, access healthcare, learn a skill, rebuild her confidence, reintegrate into society, and have a chance at her own life?

This is why Her Voice Foundation exists: to give teenage mothers and at-risk girls a second chance while working to ensure fewer girls ever have to lose themselves to these realities in the first place.

These recommendations didn’t come from a boardroom. They came from the community itself.
Community leaders, mothers, educators, and young people, from inside the room, named what must change. Here are their 7 calls to action:

1. Financially empower mothers so they can meet their daughters' basic needs, including food, hygiene materials, and clothing.

2. Ensure every school has at least one security officer to protect female students and reduce cases of abuse.

3. Enact laws requiring parents to provide for their children's welfare and education.

4. Establish a community task force to ensure compliance with girls' protection laws.

5. Expand outreach to other wards in Obanliku so more girls can be reached.

6. Introduce guidance and s*x education sessions into programme delivery.

9. Provide continuous personal development and orientation programmes for girls.

These are not HVF's recommendations; they came from the mouths of community leaders, mothers, educators, and youth. They came from the room.

Her Voice Foundation will continue to hold space for this accountability. Because girls' futures depend not just on what is said, but on what is done.

Researcher Spotlight 💡

Today, we celebrate Aniefiok Nkpoikana-Abasi, whose research was born from a deeply personal journey of combining education with motherhood as a young mother while studying at the University of Oxford.

Funded by Jesus College, University of Oxford and conducted in collaboration with Her Voice Foundation, the research explored the realities, aspirations, and educational journeys of teenage mothers in Nigeria through an intersectional lens.

The study highlights how poverty, stigma, family rejection, and limited support systems continue to shape the lives of teenage mothers, while also amplifying their resilience, dreams, and determination to build better futures for themselves and their children.

This research is a powerful reminder that when young mothers are supported with dignity, opportunity, and inclusive systems, they can thrive beyond limitations.
