Webinar: Flaring Lives- The Human Cost of Methane Emissions in the Niger Delta

Oil and gas extracted from the Niger Delta is central to Nigeria’s economic stability, accounting for approximately 65% of government fiscal revenues and more than 85% of export earnings. Alongside this economic dependence comes profound environmental and health risks for communities around extraction sites.

One of the least discussed but highly dangerous by-products of hydrocarbon extraction is methane-a potent greenhouse gas that is routinely released into the atmosphere through gas flaring, venting, leaks, and equipment failure. Though it is mostly invisible and hardly talked about, methane poses significant risks.

Exposure to it causes respiratory problems such as asthma and chronic lung diseases, cardiovascular complications, etc. Beyond the immediate health challenges it poses, methane is also a powerful driver of climate change. It has the capacity of trapping more than 80 times as much heat as carbon dioxide which can last over a 20-year period.

Despite these risks to both climate stability and the wellbeing of frontline communities, policy responses to methane emissions have remained inconsistent and weakly enforced. Regulatory gaps, inadequate monitoring, and limited transparency have allowed methane emissions to persist at significant levels.

This Webinar will feature policy discussions on combating methane emissions in Nigeria, as well as the screening of a short documentary titled Flaring Lives, produced by We the People and Policy Alert with support from the Natural Resource Governance Institute. The documentary examines the human dimension of methane emissions in oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta, and situates the ‘methane emergency’ not merely as a climate policy issue, but as a matter of public health, environmental justice, and community survival. The policy discussion and screening will highlight the urgency of action beyond the pursuit of narrow economic gains.

The adoption and application of renewable energy technology is one most significant step towards achieving just energy transition in Africa. Grateful for GEF Small Grants Programme and community leaders who refuses to let profit triumph over people.

Lekeh Development Foundation appreciate the funding support by UNDP-GEF-SGP to address carbon emission, in-door air pollution, energy poverty and associated public health concerns through the application of renewable energy technology as climate change mitigation strategy to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels.

It has enhanced a sustainable energy future by ensuring the provision of reliable and affordable energy access in a bid to reduce carbon emission and energy poverty. Khana Local Government Area, home to 469,845 people, faces significant public health challenges due to energy poverty, indoor air pollution, and climate change. Many residents rely on traditional lanterns for lighting, exacerbating these issues. Energy demand in the Khana L.G.A is driven by a low supply of energy sources and an increasing population that has contributed to deforestation resulting in heinous climate change impacts.

The project cost thousand of dollars to achieve, which includes the following:

Consultation/advocacy meeting with stakeholders.
A 5-day Niger Delta climate change conference.
Identification of potential beneficiaries and set up of the solar installation and maintenance training center.

Training on solar installation, inverter, solar panels system, and maintenance.
Provision of 18000watts of renewable energy access to 100 households in kaani community, that’s each household will receive 180 watts.

This project has helped to increase awareness and understanding of the negative impacts of climate change, Improved long lives and livelihoods, strengthened climate-resilient and sustainable development.

Climate resilience has been achieved by empowering local communities to become advocates of a just transition towards clean energy initiatives, the project had enhanced their resilience to climate change impacts and improve their knowledge of climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
