Webinar: Flaring Lives- The Human Cost of Methane Emissions in the Niger Delta
Oil and gas extracted from the Niger Delta is central to Nigeria’s economic stability, accounting for approximately 65% of government fiscal revenues and more than 85% of export earnings. Alongside this economic dependence comes profound environmental and health risks for communities around extraction sites.
One of the least discussed but highly dangerous by-products of hydrocarbon extraction is methane-a potent greenhouse gas that is routinely released into the atmosphere through gas flaring, venting, leaks, and equipment failure. Though it is mostly invisible and hardly talked about, methane poses significant risks.
Exposure to it causes respiratory problems such as asthma and chronic lung diseases, cardiovascular complications, etc. Beyond the immediate health challenges it poses, methane is also a powerful driver of climate change. It has the capacity of trapping more than 80 times as much heat as carbon dioxide which can last over a 20-year period.
Despite these risks to both climate stability and the wellbeing of frontline communities, policy responses to methane emissions have remained inconsistent and weakly enforced. Regulatory gaps, inadequate monitoring, and limited transparency have allowed methane emissions to persist at significant levels.
This Webinar will feature policy discussions on combating methane emissions in Nigeria, as well as the screening of a short documentary titled Flaring Lives, produced by We the People and Policy Alert with support from the Natural Resource Governance Institute. The documentary examines the human dimension of methane emissions in oil-producing communities of the Niger Delta, and situates the ‘methane emergency’ not merely as a climate policy issue, but as a matter of public health, environmental justice, and community survival. The policy discussion and screening will highlight the urgency of action beyond the pursuit of narrow economic gains.
