Scouting 🦅 📸 🇬🇭

In many conversations I’ve had with football stakeholders across Africa and resent times in the beautiful talent laden country Ghana, one thing keeps coming up the difference between a coach, scout and agent is still widely misunderstood.

These roles share football knowledge, but their focus and purpose are very different.

For African football to grow sustainably, we must build systems where scouting and coaching work hand in hand driven by structure, education, and long-term vision.

Football is more than just a game 🦅.

Scouting 🦅📸🇳🇬🇧🇪
A few months ago, a European agency asked me to help find promising young African talent. After scanning my database, I spotted a 17-year-old midfielder with huge potential intelligent, press-resistant, and tactically sharp, much like Moisés Caicedo.

He thrives in high pressing, possession based systems, dictating tempo and showing maturity beyond his age. Though the agency raised concerns about the level the player plays.

I reminded them Osimhen (Ultimate Strikers Academy), Kudus ( Right to Dream Academy) , Mané (Génération Foot), Anguissa (Coton Sport Academy ) all began in grassroots academies And never played in their countries Top leagues.

I told them, “Remember, I offered you this player first.”

Scouting isn’t about where a player is now it’s about seeing what they can become, it's about insight. 🦅

Scouting 🦅 📸 🇳🇬 🇨🇭

The past few days have been both challenging and inspiring. I took time off from attending games, to personal development this time it was to learn through the FIFA Training Centre session with Jürgen Klinsmann and Gilberto Silva, exploring how pressing high with purpose can create dominance in the final third. Earlier in the week, it was former Senegal First team coach Alieu Cisse who spoke on the role of full backs in modern football.

Jürgen and Gilberto's session offered valuable insights into intelligent pressing and structured attacking transitions knowledge every modern scout should understand. Some might ask, “But Daniel, you’re a scout why do you need this?” The answer is simple, scouting and coaching are deeply connected.

To spot true potential, especially in African football were I thrive, we must understand how raw attributes like pace, power, and creativity fit into modern tactical systems. Continuous learning helps bridge that gap.

In slide (2) it's interesting to note that CAF teams (Africa) ranks behind UEFA and CONMEBOL with % of opponents passes in defensive third under pressure.

Scouting & Tactical Implications for African Football.

1. Tactical Development Gap:
The data suggests a need for more structured pressing systems and coordinated team shape, especially for CAF teams aiming to compete internationally.

2. Player Profiling Insight:
Scouts should identify players with pressing intelligence awareness, anticipation, and work rate as these traits are crucial in modern football, particularly for transitions to European or South American leagues.

3. Opportunity for Growth:
CAF clubs and academies can use these data to develop pressing structures that prepare players for higher tempo football abroad.

African players already excel in athleticism and intensity coupling that with tactical understanding of pressing could make them even more competitive.

Football is more than just a game.

Scouting 🦅 📸 🇳🇬 🇩🇪

I recently watched an interview with Yakubu Aiyegbeni on Sky Sports, where he shared how growing up in Nigeria, he often played barefoot on rocky grounds.
The first time he was given football boots, he took them off after a few minutes not because he didn’t value them, but because he wasn’t used to playing with them.

Yet, from those humble beginnings, Yakubu went on to become a Premier League legend the 5th highest African goalscorer in EPL history.

Stories like this remind me why grassroots scouting in Africa is so important.
Every match I attend from dusty local pitches to youth tournaments I see players with that same hunger, resilience, and raw ability waiting to be discovered.

The talent pool in Africa is massive, but only a fraction of it is being tapped.
With proper guidance, opportunities, and development structures, the next Yakubu is already out there and he’s waiting to be found.

🎯 To foreign clubs, agents, and sporting directors: there’s a wave of emerging African talent ready to make their mark all they need is the right platform.

Football is more than just a game 🦅

🦅🎥 The Lesson That Changed My Approach

When I started scouting, one Head of Recruitment told me something I’ll never forget:

“Never judge a player based on highlights they only show you what they want you to see.”

That single statement reshaped how I scout, analyze, and identify true potential. 🌍⚽

When I started my journey in football scouting, I once received a DM from a player in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He had sent me his highlights and profile impressive clips showcasing his best moments.

Eager to get a professional opinion, I forwarded the video to the Head of Recruitment at the club I was volunteering with at the time and asked, “Sir, could you please watch this footage and share your thoughts on the player?”

He replied,

“Daniel, I never judge a player based on highlights.”

Curious, I asked, “Why?”

He said,

“Because they only show you what they want you to see.”

That statement stuck with me. It became one of the most important principles guiding my scouting career.

Since then, I’ve learned to look beyond highlights and focus on full match analysis and live games. From street pitches to league stadiums, city to city, that single lesson has sharpened my eyes and elevated my scouting skills immensely.

Studying a player’s decisions with and without the ball, observing their mentality, communication, technicalities, impact on the field and assessing how they respond to different game situations.

This approach has sharpened my analytical eye during live games, allowing me to filter the noise and focus on the details that truly define a player’s potential.

It has also deepened my understanding of football cultures across various clubs, team dynamics, and player personalities across Africa, giving my scouting reports a more complete and authentic edge.

Football scouting is not just about what you see it’s about what you don’t see at first glance .

Football is more than just a game 🦅

“The talent pool in Africa is vast across all age categories. It’s common to see 12-, 13-, and 14-year-old players competing under intense weather and difficult playing conditions. These environments naturally cultivate resilience, adaptability, and psychological toughness from a young age.

Therefore, when an African player lacks competitive spirit or mental strength on the field, it often points to an underlying gap in most cases I found that to be family issues (In Africa family is beyond nucleus, it's extended!) . The African football DNA is built on hard work, hunger, and survival; these traits form the foundation of many players’ success stories

Scouting 🦅📸🇳🇬🔥

I knew I had hit a new threshold when, in a single day, I watched three grassroots matches and one league game in two different locations, several kilometres apart.

Building a database of special football talent in Africa is a huge task, but also an enjoyable one. It has given me the opportunity to interact with both players and coaches, while uncovering hidden gems with real potential.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting Super Eagles vice-captain, Kenneth Omeruo, who was pleased to see the work I’m doing to spotlight grassroots talent.

The list of players I’m monitoring keeps growing, and their development remains a priority.

Scouting 📸🦅🇳🇬🇳🇴🔥

In Lagos yesterday, I attended the National Youth League (The Creative Championship) at the Surulere stadium with a clear scouting objective, to identify promising wingers capable of taking on opponents and creating danger in the final third.

Over multiple observations, I was able to identify a couple of young players who displayed strong dribbling ability, directness, and creativity in attacking situations.

In addition, I observed a number of U-19 players across other positions who demonstrated technical quality, tactical awareness, and growth potential.

I was also impressed with the Pace of the 2nd game particularly it was intense, connected with coaches and team managers to monitor closely the team and players as my scouting style is to know a team in and out of the pitch

This reinforces the fact that Africa’s talent pool is vast, yet still largely untapped, with many players capable of developing into elite professionals.

These players are now firmly on my radar for continued monitoring and analysis.

Football is not just a game .
