From thought-provoking keynote presentations to engaging panel discussions and actionable recommendations, the 33rd LAPO Annual Development Forum reinforced one important message: every child deserves a safe and healthy environment to learn and thrive.

Eniola Oluranti, Head of Corporate Communications, LAPO presented the Communiqué at the event. The Forum highlighted the challenges facing Nigerian schools, including inadequate access to safe drinking water, functional toilets and hygiene facilities. It noted that poor maintenance, insufficient funding and unclear institutional responsibilities continue to undermine the sustainability of school WASH services.

The Forum also emphasised the impact of inadequate WASH facilities on children's health, dignity, school attendance and learning outcomes, particularly for girls and children with disabilities.

Key recommendations included:
▪️ Clear institutional responsibility for school WASH services and repairs.
▪️ Dedicated maintenance plans and sustainable funding.
▪️ Regular inspections and transparent accountability.
▪️ Gender-sensitive and disability-inclusive facilities.
▪️ Stronger hygiene education and community participation.
▪️ Integration of WASH into efforts to improve school enrolment, attendance, retention and learning outcomes.

The Forum called on governments at all levels, development partners, school administrators, civil society organisations, parents and communities to work together to ensure every Nigerian child has access to safe, functional, inclusive and sustainable WASH facilities.

It also commended LAPO for sustaining the Annual Development Forum as a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange and advocacy on critical national development issues.

The call to action is clear: move beyond building facilities to ensuring they are maintained, funded and functional for every child.

At the 33rd LAPO Annual Development Forum, speakers highlighted practical steps for creating safer, healthier and more inclusive learning environment. From strengthening menstrual health education and promoting everyday hygiene practices to ensuring water quality and sustaining WASH facilities.

The message is clear: lasting change requires collaboration among government, schools, development partners, civil society organisations, parents and communities.

As stakeholders reflect on the discussions, the priority must be to translate commitments into practical action so that every Nigerian child can learn in a safe and healthy environment.

At the 33rd LAPO Annual Development Forum, Chief Osita Chidoka, former Minister of Aviation and Chancellor of the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, challenged stakeholders to look beyond the construction of school facilities to the systems that keep them functional.

Delivering his address through Deputy Corps Marshal (rtd) Victor Nwokolo, Chief emphasised that access to safe water and sanitation in schools is ultimately a test of governance, accountability and institutional responsibility.

His message was clear: success must not be measured by the facilities we build, but by the children who can use them safely, every day.

At the 33rd LAPO Annual Development Forum, Dr. Mrs. Oyefemi Obazee, Chairperson of the LAPO Board of Directors, emphasised the importance of safe water, sanitation and hygiene in creating healthy learning environments for Nigerian children.
