Strengthening Local Institutions for Inclusive & Participatory Governance

Thamani is working with local stakeholders to strengthen opportunities for women, youth and other underrepresented groups to participate meaningfully in decision-making and contribute to development priorities within their communities.

With support from the Development Exchange Centre (DEC), implementing an intervention titled “Strengthening Local Institutions on Inclusive and Participatory Local Governance” in Shongom Local Government Areas.

The intervention seeks to strengthen the capacity of local institutions and community structures to promote inclusive participation, responsive leadership, transparency, accountability and meaningful citizen engagement in local governance.

Transparency and accountability are at the heart of effective local governance.

Through its consultancy supported by Development Exchange Centre (DEC), Thamani is working to strengthen practical understanding of transparency, accountability, integrity, records management, information sharing, citizen feedback and grievance mechanisms** among local institutions.

The goal is simple: strengthen institutions that can listen to citizens, provide relevant information, respond to concerns and account for decisions and resources.

Citizens Must Have a Voice in Local Governance.

Effective local governance begins with meaningful citizen participation.
As part of its consultancy supported by Development Exchange Centre (DEC), Thamani is strengthening local institutions in Bauchi and Shongom LGAs to better engage citizens in the governance cycle from identifying community priorities and planning to implementation, monitoring and feedback.

The intervention also promotes inclusive participation of all.
When citizens participate meaningfully, institutions are better positioned to understand community needs, respond effectively and build public trust.
Inclusive governance is governance that leaves no one behind.

GBV CAN ALSO AFFECT WOMEN’S ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE
As part of our commitment to strengthening community awareness on the links between Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and health, Thamani is stepping down key lessons from a training facilitated by BERI.

One important issue we are highlighting is how malaria and other health conditions can be worsened by GBV, particularly when women are denied the freedom or resources to seek timely medical care.
When a husband or partner prevents his wife from attending a health facility, accessing medication, or making decisions about her own healthcare, this can have serious consequences. Delays in seeking treatment for malaria and other illnesses can lead to severe complications and, in some cases, preventable deaths.
Healthcare is a right, not a privilege that should depend on permission.

Thamani calls on husbands, families, community leaders and other stakeholders to promote supportive relationships, timely healthcare-seeking behaviour and zero tolerance for all forms of GBV.
Let us speak up. Let us support women to access healthcare. Let us prevent avoidable deaths.

GBV is also a health issue.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) can increase vulnerability to serious health challenges, including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and other physical and mental health complications.

Through awareness and training, community women in Bauchi State are being equipped with knowledge to understand the link between GBV and health, recognize risks, seek timely support, and promote safer and healthier communities.
Ending GBV is not only about protection, it is also about protecting health and saving lives.

Strengthens Action on HIV, TB and Malaria

As part of our commitment to advancing gender equality, health and the wellbeing of women and girls, Thamani participated in a capacity-building training for Community-Based and Women-Led Organizations on HIV, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria.

The training, organized by Better Life Restoration Initiative- BERI through a project supported by the Global Fund’s Gender Equality Fund (GEF), strengthened our understanding of gender-transformative and gender-affirmative approaches to health.

For Thamani, this learning goes beyond knowledge. We are translating it into action by creating awareness within communities and strengthening our advocacy around HIV, TB and malaria—while recognizing how gender inequality, harmful norms and gender-based violence (GBV) can increase vulnerability to poor health outcomes and limit access to essential health services.

Our action plan will focus on community awareness, prevention, access to health information and services, and advocacy for gender-responsive health interventions, particularly for women, girls and other vulnerable groups.

Thamani believes that addressing GBV must also include addressing the health consequences and vulnerabilities that gender inequality creates.

Healthy communities require gender equality, informed choices and access to quality healthcare.
