Earlier today, we welcomed representatives of the Women Child Youth Health and Education Initiative to our office for a partnership visit.

Beyond the usual introductions and discussions, the meeting was a reminder that the challenges facing women and children cannot be addressed by one organisation alone. They require partnership, shared responsibility and collective action.

We had meaningful conversations on how both organisations can collaborate more effectively to advance our shared mission, strengthen community interventions, and reach more women and children with impactful programmes.

A key part of our discussion was the implementation of the Bauchi State Child Protection Law 2023. We explored opportunities for stronger collaboration, awareness, advocacy, and engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the law translates from legislation into meaningful protection for children across Bauchi State

A law is only as powerful as its implementation. For children to truly be protected, communities must know their rights, institutions must understand their responsibilities, and relevant stakeholders must work together to ensure that the law becomes more than words on paper.

Today’s engagement was therefore not just a partnership visit—it was a step towards building stronger collaboration for better protection, stronger systems and a safer future for children in Bauchi State.

At Ikra Foundation for Women & Youth Development we remain committed to building partnerships that move conversations into action and turn commitments into real change in the lives of women and children.

Yesterday, Ikra Foundation for Women & Youth Development in collaboration with Plan International Nigeria with support from Global Affairs Canada wrapped up a two-day dissemination and stakeholders’ exposition workshop on the Gazetted Bauchi State Child Protection Law 2023, bringing together key stakeholders to better understand the law and discuss what needs to be done to make its implementation effective across the state.

The sessions, facilitated by His Worship Amina Garuba Ahmed and His Worship Maigari Sani focused on important provisions of the law, the responsibilities of relevant institutions, pathways for protecting children, and the practical challenges that can affect access to justice and effective child protection.

A key part of the workshop was ensuring that the law does not remain within the pages of a gazette. Copies of the gazetted law were provided to all participants to take back to their respective institutions, share with relevant colleagues and use as a reference in supporting its implementation.

We were also encouraged by the commitment from participating institutions to play their part in ensuring that the law is effectively implemented. This commitment is important because protecting children requires more than one institution—it requires the justice system, government agencies, civil society, communities and other stakeholders to work together.

We appreciate all the government institutions, CSOs and other stakeholders who participated and contributed in the workshop.

Together, we can build a stronger child protection system in Bauchi State where every child is protected, heard and treated with dignity.

DAY 1: Stakeholders’ Dissemination of the Gazetted Bauchi State Child Protection Law 2023

Today, Ikra Foundation for Women & Youth Development kicked off the dissemination and exposition of the Gazetted Bauchi State Child Protection Law 2023.

Participants from the *National Human Rights Commission, Law Enforcement Agencies, and Social Welfare Officers* actively engaged in capacity building on the key provisions of the Law.

This program is implemented by Ikra Foundation under the Plan International Nigeria ASPIRE Project with support from Global Affairs Canada.

FROM LAW TO ACTION: ADVANCING DISABILITY INCLUSION IN BAUCHI STATE!

Yesterday, Ikra Foundation for Women & Youth Development convened a Stakeholders’ Roundtable on the Implementation of the Bauchi State Persons with Disability Commission Law, 2026, bringing together representatives from MDAs, CSOs, and OPDs to move the conversation from legislation to practical implementation.

The roundtable focused on institutional responsibilities, effective coordination, accountability, advocacy, and the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in the implementation of the law.

Stakeholders also identified key actions needed to ensure that the Commission becomes functional and that the rights, dignity, opportunities, and inclusion of persons with disabilities are translated into measurable results across Bauchi State.

The panel discussion further provided an opportunity for MDAs, CSOs, and OPDs to share perspectives, identify gaps, and propose practical actions to ensure that the law translates into meaningful improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities across Bauchi State
The message was clear: the enactment of the law is a milestone, but its impact will be measured by how effectively it is implemented.

Today, during the Stakeholders Roundtable on the implementation of the Bauchi State Person with Disability Commission Law, 2026, Bashir Hassan, a senior journalist and reporter with Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative, made presentation on the Role of the Media in Advancing Disability Rights.

He encouraged PWDs to take ownership of their initiatives, mobilize resources, build partnerships, and lead programmes that address the issues affecting their communities.

“PWDs should not always wait to be invited; they should also organize, lead, and drive initiatives.”

The conversation highlights the importance of shifting from participation to meaningful leadership and ownership, ensuring that PWDs are not just beneficiaries of development but active drivers of change.

📢 A Major Milestone for Child Protection in Bauchi State!

Ikra Foundation for Women & Youth Development is pleased to receive 50 official copies of the Bauchi State Child Protection Law 2023 Gazette, presented by the Solicitor General of Bauchi State.

This milestone represents more than the handover of legal documents, it strengthens our collective commitment to protecting every child from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence.

The gazetted copies will support our ongoing efforts to disseminate the law and build the capacity of Magistrates and Child Justice Administration actors, ensuring they have the knowledge and tools needed to effectively interpret, apply, and enforce the law in the best interests of every child.

In the coming weeks, we also expect to receive additional copies of the Gazette, which have been earmarked for the dissemination to High Court Judges and other relevant child protection service providers, further strengthening the implementation of the Child Protection Law across Bauchi State.

We sincerely appreciate the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice for this important collaboration. Together, we are moving beyond legislation to implementation—ensuring that the rights of every child are protected and upheld across Bauchi State.

Every child deserves to grow up safe, protected, and empowered. Together, we can make this a reality.

Yesterday Ikra Foundation for Women & Youth Development team participated in Orientation and Fraud Awareness Training organized by Plan International Nigeria for staff implementing the ASPIRE Project.

The session strengthened our understanding of fraud prevention, ethical conduct, accountability, and the importance of safeguarding project resources. It also reinforced practical measures for identifying, preventing, and reporting fraudulent practices, ensuring that interventions are delivered with the highest standards of transparency and integrity.

We believe that effective development requires accountability, trust, and responsible stewardship of resources. We remain committed to upholding these values in all our programmes and partnerships as we continue to create lasting impact for women, youth, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable communities.

We appreciate Plan International for organizing this timely and insightful learning session and for continuously investing in the capacity of project partners.

STRENGTHENING DISABILITY INCLUSION THROUGH KNOWLEDGE AND ACTION!

Following the historic assent of the Bauchi State Persons with Disabilities Commission Law by His Excellency, the Governor of Bauchi State, Ikra Foundation for Women and Youth Development successfully convened a one-day capacity-building workshop for Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The workshop focused on:
✅ Understanding the key provisions of the new law.
✅ Clarifying the roles and responsibilities of OPDs in promoting its effective implementation.
✅ Equipping stakeholders with practical advocacy strategies to advance disability inclusion across Bauchi State.

Passing a law is only the beginning. Its true impact depends on informed stakeholders, coordinated action, and sustained advocacy. By bringing together government institutions and OPDs, we are fostering stronger collaboration to ensure that the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities are not only protected on paper but realized in practice.

We remain committed to supporting the implementation of the law and working alongside all stakeholders to build a more inclusive Bauchi where no one is left behind.
