Many farmers in Bauchi State no longer rely on the calendar alone to determine planting seasons. Rainfall has become increasingly erratic, with delayed onset and prolonged dry spells between rain events. Climate change is not only altering how much rain falls, but also when and how it falls, creating significant risks for agriculture, food security, and rural livelihoods.

Climate change is no longer a distant prediction—it is a lived reality. In Bauchi State, the rains that once arrived consistently have become increasingly unpredictable. Weeks can pass without rainfall during what should be the wet season, affecting farmers, livelihoods, food security, and community resilience. This is why climate action and climate justice are urgent priorities for vulnerable communities across northern Nigeria.

For GNAHC, this is an important climate justice issue. Rural communities contribute very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, yet they bear some of the harshest consequences:

1. Reduced crop yields.
2. Food insecurity.
3. Water scarcity.
4. Increased poverty.
5. Greater risk of conflict over natural resources.

In the past, by late May and early June, many parts of Bauchi State would often have experienced more regular rainfall, allowing farmers to establish crops confidently. Now, rainfall is becoming more erratic:

1. The rainy season may start later than expected.
2. Rainfall can come in fewer but heavier storms.
3. Long dry spells can occur even after the rains have started.
4. Higher temperatures cause faster evaporation, making the land feel drier.

Northern Nigeria is particularly vulnerable because it already lies within a semi-arid zone bordering the Sahel. Climate variability, land degradation, deforestation, and desertification can worsen the impacts of changing rainfall patterns.
