From Learning to Livelihoods: Celebrating Transformation, Resilience, and New Beginnings

A journey that began with learning has now culminated in a celebration of transformation, resilience, and opportunity.

The successful graduation of beneficiaries from the GIZ ZME-sponsored Reintegration Support Training Programme marks the completion of an intensive 25-day life skills, technical and vocational skills acquisition programme designed to equip participants with practical, market-driven competencies for sustainable livelihoods, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment.

Held on Thursday, 2 July 2026, at the Event Hall, Edo Production Centre, Sapele Road, Benin City, the graduation ceremony celebrated not just the completion of a training programme, but the beginning of new economic possibilities for beneficiaries who have acquired the skills, confidence, and entrepreneurial mindset needed to build self-reliant futures.

Sponsored by GIZ ZME and implemented in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC), Benin City, the Edo State Migration Agency (EDMA), the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and Genius Hub as the implementing partner, the programme reflects a shared commitment to promoting sustainable reintegration, decent employment, and inclusive economic development through practical skills acquisition.

Throughout the programme, beneficiaries received intensive hands-on training across four high-demand vocational areas:

• Hairdressing and Wig Making
• Curtain, Duvet and Bedspread Making
• Pastries and Finger Food Production
• Hair Barbing

Beyond technical instruction, participants also developed essential life skills that strengthened their confidence, communication, leadership, resilience, and entrepreneurial readiness—ensuring they were prepared not only to master a vocation but also to build sustainable businesses and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

One of the programme's defining achievements was the measurable transformation witnessed among participants. Through continuous practical sessions, facilitator-led instruction, mentorship, and hands-on learning, beneficiaries progressed from limited technical knowledge to confidently producing professional-quality products and delivering practical demonstrations that reflected industry standards.

The graduation ceremony showcased this transformation through impressive product exhibitions and live demonstrations by the beneficiaries.

The Curtain, Duvet and Bedspread Making trainees displayed beautifully crafted curtains, duvets, bedsheets, bedspreads, and throw pillows, all professionally sewn, neatly packaged, and presented to an exceptional standard.

Hair Barbing trainees captivated guests with a live haircut demonstration, confidently showcasing the precision, professionalism, and technical competence acquired throughout the training while reinforcing that vocational excellence knows no gender boundaries.

The Hairdressing and Wig Making class exhibited professionally crafted braided wigs, ventilated wigs, and human hair installations while sharing inspiring testimonies of their journey from little or no prior experience to mastering advanced techniques in wig construction, installation, styling, and revamping.

Participants from the Pastries and Finger Food Production class presented an impressive assortment of cakes, samosas, spring rolls, egg rolls, chin chin, peanuts, money bags, and other finger foods. They also demonstrated their understanding of professional food production by explaining the complete process behind the ceremonial graduation cake before dignitaries officially performed the cake-cutting ceremony.

The event was graced by distinguished stakeholders whose continued collaboration contributed significantly to the programme's success, including:

In their goodwill messages, speakers consistently encouraged beneficiaries to view the knowledge, certificates, and starter packs received as valuable tools for building sustainable livelihoods. They emphasized that the true success of the programme will be measured not by graduation day alone, but by the businesses established, incomes generated, and lives transformed in the months and years ahead.

A defining highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of certificates and starter packs to beneficiaries across all four vocational disciplines, providing practical resources to support their transition from training into entrepreneurship and productive employment.

In her closing remarks, Isimeme Whyte, GMD/Founder of Genius Hub, expressed profound appreciation to GIZ ZME, the German Government, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Migrant Resource Centre, the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the Edo State Migration Agency, facilitators, project partners, and the entire Genius Hub team for their collective commitment to delivering a programme that creates lasting impact.

As this chapter closes, another begins.

Weeks ago, many participants began the GIZ ZME-sponsored Technical and Vocational Skills Development Training Programme journey with limited technical knowledge, little practical experience, and uncertainty about their ability to compete within today's economy.

Today, they have something far more valuable than certificates or even starter packs.
They leave with practical skills, renewed confidence, entrepreneurial readiness, and a pathway towards sustainable livelihoods.

Throughout the programme, 80 participants successfully completed intensive training across four vocational disciplines:
• Pastries & Finger Food
• Hair Barbing
• Hair Dressing & Wig Making
• Curtain, Duvet & Bedspread Making

To objectively measure learning outcomes, participants completed both pre-training and post-training assessments covering identical technical competencies.
The results demonstrated remarkable progress.

Across virtually every assessed topic, participant performance improved dramatically—from baseline scores recorded in the low double digits to post-training achievement levels consistently reaching between 90% and 100%.

These findings provide strong evidence that the programme's practical, hands-on learning methodology successfully equipped participants with market-relevant, job-ready skills within a relatively short period.

Yet, perhaps the most inspiring outcomes emerged outside the assessment sheets.
Even before the programme concluded:
• Four participants from the Pastries and Finger Food class had already begun providing catering services, turning newly acquired knowledge into real income-generating opportunities.
• One participant independently designed and produced promotional marketing flyers to advertise her services—demonstrating increased entrepreneurial confidence, professional readiness, and an understanding of business visibility.

Participant stories further reflected the programme's broader impact.

One participant shared that he had previously sold snacks produced by others but can now confidently produce them himself, reducing dependence on suppliers and increasing business opportunities.

Another participant explained how learning curtain, duvet, and bedspread production would enable her to expand her existing retail business into manufacturing—creating multiple streams of income.

Participants in the beauty training expressed excitement about mastering modern industry techniques that will improve service quality and strengthen their competitiveness within the marketplace.

Recognising that training should not end in the classroom, participants were also onboarded onto Betaawork, creating a bridge between skills acquisition and economic opportunity.

Halfway through the GIZ ZME-sponsored Vocational Skills Development Training Programme, the transformation was already becoming visible—not only in the products participants were creating, but in the confidence with which they approached every practical session.

Across all four vocational tracks, participants moved from observation to practical application, repeatedly demonstrating newly acquired competencies through facilitator-guided exercises, collaborative learning, and hands-on production.

The programme's unique strength lies in its integrated approach.

While participants continued developing technical competencies in pastry production, hair barbing, wig making, and textile production, they were simultaneously strengthening the personal and professional skills required to succeed beyond the training environment.

Sessions focused on:
• Self-esteem and positive self-image
• Communication and customer engagement
• Emotional intelligence and empathy
• Leadership and accountability
• Gratitude and positive affirmations
• Workplace professionalism

These life skills became evident during practical sessions as participants demonstrated stronger collaboration, improved communication, greater confidence, and increased willingness to take initiative.

Continuous assessments and facilitator feedback showed consistent progress in participants' understanding of production standards, hygiene practices, equipment handling, quality control, customer service, product presentation, and entrepreneurial thinking.

Perhaps the most encouraging indicator of success was the growing confidence participants displayed when independently executing practical tasks that many had never attempted before joining the programme.

The learning environment shifted from instructor-led demonstrations to participant-led execution—a clear reflection that knowledge was being translated into practical competence.

The programme continued reinforcing an important principle:
Skills development is not simply about teaching people how to produce products—it is about equipping them with the confidence, resilience, and professional readiness to create sustainable livelihoods.

With every practical exercise completed and every lesson mastered, participants moved one step closer to becoming employable professionals, confident entrepreneurs, and contributors to local economic development.
