In our society, when it comes to persons with disabilities, the first response is often sympathy. And while that comes from a place of care, it is simply not enough.

The real question is; are we creating solutions? Are we taking action?

We were live at the News Central Townhall Series in Asaba, Delta State , where this important conversation took center stage. From lived experiences to expert insights, it was clear that the focus must shift from just feeling to doing.

At NAPVID, we remain committed to being part of these conversations—across states and spaces—ensuring that inclusion is not just discussed, but actively pursued.

Because beyond sympathy, what truly matters is action.

PWDS ARE VICTIMS TOO!!

The issue of accessibility in sexual and gender-based violence response is not optional, it is essential. Survivors with disabilities deserve services that are safe, inclusive, and dignified. From physical spaces to communication, procedures, and the way decisions are made, every barrier removed makes care more effective, justice more attainable, and trust in the system stronger.

Inclusive services aren’t just good practices, they are a legal, human rights, and moral obligation. True inclusion means systems adapt to people, not the other way around.

This was at the heart of our recent SARC Workers Training Workshop, As part of the Capacity Building for Justice Providers in Handling Vulnerable Groups Project, implemented by NAPVID and supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC). The RoLAC Programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA.

STRENGTHENING SPECIAL EDUCATION IN EDO STATE.

Today, we had a productive meeting with National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) to engage on key issues affecting special education in Edo State.

During the meeting, NASET highlighted several challenges currently faced by schools, including dilapidated facilities, transportation difficulties for students, limited hostel support, shortage of assistive technology, and inadequate access to computers and stable power supply—all of which directly impact learning and participation, especially during external examinations.

They also acknowledged NAPVID’s previous intervention at Ihogbe, noting the positive impact of improved facilities and the need for sustained support across more schools.

Our Executive Director commended the teachers for their dedication and emphasized the importance of strengthening foundational education, addressing transportation through more sustainable options such as boarding facilities, and working closely with relevant commissions to ensure special education is prioritized.

We will continue working together to advocate for inclusive, accessible, and quality education for children with disabilities.

13 Years Later: A Journey of Gratitude and Triumph 🌟

On the 11th of February, we had the honor of welcoming Kindness Idahosa, ESQ to the NAPVID Secretariat. Her visit was more than a courtesy, it was a heartfelt reminder of why we dedicate ourselves to empowering persons with disabilities. These are the moments that inspire us to keep pushing for inclusion, equity, and real impact across Nigeria.

Kindness first came to NAPVID 13 years ago, after being out of school for over a decade. With determination, support, and a help from NAPVID, she was able to return to her studies and rebuild her life.

Now, 13 years later, she stands as a lawyer in the Ministry of Justice, Edo State — a shining example of resilience, perseverance, and what can happen when talent meets opportunity.

Her courtesy visit was a beautiful reminder that the work we do at NAPVID doesn’t just change lives temporarily — it transforms futures. From providing the initial support to seeing her succeed and come back to say “thank you,” moments like these reaffirm our mission: to empower, uplift, and open doors for persons with visible disabilities across Nigeria.

We celebrate Kindness, and we celebrate all the lives our work continues to touch. 💫

UNDERSTANDING ACCESSIBILITY IN THE EDO STATE CIVIL SERVICE

The Capacity Building for Justice Providers in Handling Vulnerable Groups Project was extended to include a research study assessing the level of accessibility within the Edo State Civil Service for persons with disabilities, with a focus on understanding existing systems, practices, and service delivery structures.

The research was conducted by Network for the Advancement of People with Visible Disabilities (NAPVID) to generate evidence on accessibility within the civil service and support informed discussions around inclusive public service delivery.

Following the study, NAPVID convened a validation workshop to review the research findings, engage stakeholders, and confirm the accuracy and relevance of the outcomes. The workshop provided a platform for dialogue, reflection, and shared understanding, while also advancing conversations on strengthening accessibility and inclusion within the Edo State Civil Service.

This engagement reflects a commitment to evidence-based action and continuous improvement in building public institutions that are responsive to the needs and rights of persons with disabilities.
