GETTING NIGERIAN YOUTH INVOLVED IN REFORM PROCESSES
A Comprehensive Report from the Youth Electoral Reform Project (YERP-Naija) – South-South Region
From Participation to Policy Impact: Empowering Youth Voices to Shape Nigeria's Democratic Future. Legislative Engagement, Electoral Reform Advocacy, Success Stories, Challenges, and the Way Forward
INTRODUCTION
Nigeria stands at a defining moment in its democratic journey. As the nation prepares for future electoral cycles and deepens conversations on constitutional reform, the active participation of young people is no longer optional; it is essential. With over 70 percent of Nigeria’s population under 35, youth represent the largest constituency capable of shaping a more transparent, accountable, inclusive, and credible democratic future.
The Youth Electoral Reform Project (YERP-Naija) was conceived as a strategic response to the growing demand for meaningful youth engagement in governance, electoral reform, and public policy processes. Implemented across Nigeria's geopolitical zones, Kimpact Development initiative, KDI who doubled as National Coordinator and North Central Partner, J-DEV Foundation North West Partner, The New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative Southwest Partner, Catch Them Young Community Initiative South East Partner; Connected Advocacy South-South Partner, as well as the Child Protection and Peer Learning Initiative North East partner, this reform project was supported by the National Democratic Institute and National Endowment for democracy NED, this reform project sought to bridge the gap between citizens and decision-makers by creating platforms where young people could influence reforms that directly affect their democratic future.
In the South-South Region, YERP-Naija mobilized youth leaders, civil society organizations, media practitioners, community stakeholders, and policymakers around a shared vision of strengthening democratic institutions and advancing electoral integrity. Through legislative advocacy, civic education, public consultations, grassroots mobilization, media engagement, and participation in constitutional reform processes, the project elevated citizen voices and ensured that youth priorities were visible within national reform conversations.
A major milestone of the project was contributing to sustained advocacy that supported the passage of electronic transmission of election results by the 10th National Assembly—an important step toward improving electoral transparency and restoring public confidence in democratic processes.
This report captures the journey, achievements, lessons learned, challenges encountered, and opportunities ahead. More importantly, it serves as a call to action for government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, media actors, the private sector, and citizens to collaborate in strengthening democratic governance and institutional accountability.
The successes documented in this report demonstrate that when young people are empowered, organized, and meaningfully engaged, they become powerful drivers of reform and democratic transformation. As Nigeria advances toward the 2027 General Elections and beyond, sustained partnerships, strategic investments, and collective action will be critical to translating reform commitments into lasting democratic outcomes for all Nigerians.
We invite stakeholders and partners to join us in scaling these efforts, deepening civic participation, and building a democracy that reflects the aspirations, voices, and leadership of Nigeria's youth.

Our New Research reform publication on Electoral Climate Policy 2026.
Strengthening Democratic Accountability and Climate Governance through the Climate Electoral Protocol Framework

The 2027 electoral cycle presents a defining moment for integrating climate governance reforms into democratic processes in Nigeria and across Africa. Electoral Climate Policy: Climate Electoral Protocol 2026, produced by Connected Advocacy, provides a forward-looking research framework that bridges electoral accountability with climate action, environmental justice, and inclusive governance. The publication highlights the urgent need for political actors, electoral institutions, civil society, youth movements, and development partners to mainstream climate priorities into campaign agendas, policy debates, and governance commitments.
As climate disasters increasingly affect vulnerable communities, we need to strengthen our electoral infrastructure to address voter disenfranchisement and the destruction of voting materials due to climate-related conditions. This publication therefore recommends stronger collaboration among policymakers, agencies, electoral stakeholders, grassroots actors, and international partners to institutionalize a Climate Electoral Protocol that promotes transparency, citizen participation, climate-responsive leadership, and policy continuity beyond election cycles. The research calls for accelerated multi-stakeholder action, strategic financing, and localized implementation mechanisms to drive the next level of transformation in democratic and climate governance.
We look forward to your feedback, recommendations, and collaboration on the next-level reform engagement in this direction. Can the Nigerian Energy Transition Tackle Youth Unemployment Amidst the Climate Catastrophe in the Niger Delta Region?.
A Final Research Report from the Bayelsa Climate Ambassadors Programme (BCAP) on Energy Democracy, Youth Leadership, and Green Economic Opportunities.
The Niger Delta region of Nigeria stands at a critical intersection of environmental vulnerability, socio-economic challenges, and aspirations for sustainable development. For decades, the region has borne the brunt of climate impacts stemming from oil-dependent energy systems, environmental degradation, and uneven development, while also experiencing high youth unemployment and limited access to stable economic opportunities. As Nigeria aligns with global climate commitments and plans a just energy transition, we need to understand how emerging energy frameworks can reduce carbon emissions and deliver inclusive socio-economic benefits for its young population.
This research report examines the nexus between Nigeria’s energy transition and youth unemployment within the context of the Niger Delta—focusing specifically on Bayelsa State, a frontline region grappling with environmental change and economic disruption. Anchored in evidence and experiences from the Bayelsa Climate Ambassadors Programme (BCAP), this study interrogates how principles of energy democracy, coupled with youth leadership and green economic opportunities, can catalyze pathways toward both climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
The Bayelsa Climate Ambassadors Programme represents a practical embodiment of localized climate action, engaging young people as agents of energy transition and community transformation. By exploring BCAP’s approaches, activities, and outcomes, this report sheds light on the potential of youth-driven initiatives to influence energy governance, stimulate green entrepreneurship, and contribute to a more equitable transition that addresses the dual challenges of climate catastrophe and unemployment.
In an era where climate change threatens to deepen inequalities and where global shifts toward renewable energy systems are accelerating, the Nigerian context offers a unique vantage point. It exposes the structural barriers that have historically marginalized young people, especially in the Niger Delta, and highlights opportunities for reframing Nigeria’s energy future in ways that are socially inclusive, environmentally just, and economically empowering.
This report draws on qualitative and quantitative insights, stakeholder consultations, and programmatic evaluations to answer the central question: Can the Nigerian energy transition meaningfully tackle youth unemployment amidst the climate crisis in the Niger Delta region? By situating youth at the heart of energy governance and green economic innovation, this study contributes to policy debates, development strategies, find here link report https://lnkd.in/eXP6h5Wu LEAP AfricaYerpnaijaU.S. Mission Nigeria Visit Netherlands UNFPA UNDP in Nigeria

Update from our
The Media-Community Dialogue on Renewable Energy Democracy seeks to engage local media, community leaders, and policymakers in advancing public knowledge about renewable energy access and the concept of a just transition in Nigeria. This event focuses on building journalists' capacity to report on energy reforms, particularly in communities dependent on extractive industries such as oil and gas. Nigeria’s energy transition requires informed and balanced reporting to ensure that all citizens, particularly vulnerable communities are included in the ongoing reforms.
To strengthen local media reportage on renewable energy access as a just transition within Nigeria’s extractive sector reforms, media outlets should focus on highlighting the positive impacts of transitioning to renewable energy sources, particularly on communities heavily reliant on oil and gas, emphasizing social and economic benefits alongside environmental advantages while also addressing potential concerns and actively engaging with affected stakeholders to ensure balanced reporting.
