There’s a reason to***co keeps pulling people in. It doesn’t show up as harm at first. It shows up as stress relief, confidence, “just one stick,” or a way to belong. That’s the mask.

But behind that appeal is a cycle that slowly takes more than it gives - your breath, your energy, your health, your freedom.

This World No To***co Day, we’re unmasking it for what it truly is: not a lifestyle choice, but a quiet trap many don’t see until they’re already in it.

And the truth? Stepping out is possible. Even if it’s not perfect. Even if it takes time.

During our Community Outreach on Cancer Awareness and Prevention at Ekiosa Primary Health Centre, what stood out most were the conversations; listening to community members, understanding their concerns, addressing misconceptions, and creating opportunities for people to learn more about cervical cancer, Hepatitis B, screening, and prevention.

Improving cancer outcomes starts with awareness, trust, community engagement, and ensuring that prevention services are accessible to those who need them most.

Earlier this month, CDMA had the privilege of joining a workshop organized by Nigeria To***co Control Alliance and African Capacity Building Foundation focused on to***co industry monitoring frameworks and to***co control strategies.

Represented by our Executive Director, Pharm (Dr) Eseosa Iyagbaye, the workshop was yet another insightful and impactful engagement that strengthened important conversations around public health advocacy, accountability, and the urgent need to address risk factors driving the growing burden of chronic diseases across Africa.

At CDMA, we recognize to***co use as one of the leading preventable risk factors linked to several chronic and non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory illnesses, and stroke. This is why, beyond treatment and community support, we remain deeply committed to prevention, awareness, and advocacy efforts that promote healthier communities and stronger public health systems.

We appreciate the opportunity to learn, contribute, and collaborate alongside organizations and advocates working towards a healthier future.

Stronger health systems are essential for sustainable cancer prevention.

At the primary healthcare level, many opportunities for early detection are still missed due to gaps in implementation, access, and system capacity.

Our focus is on strengthening these systems ensuring that prevention and screening services are integrated, accessible, and consistent. ✅✅

We’re glad to officially commence our CanReAct pilot project in Benin City, Edo State 🇳🇬

We began at Ekiosa Health Centre with a training on cervical cancer screening (Virtual Inspection with Acetic Acid), equipping the local health workforce including nurses with the knowledge and confidence to deliver screening services within the primary healthcare setting.

Our work is rooted in a simple but urgent reality:
many cancers, including cervical and liver cancer, are preventable but access to screening, vaccination, and early care is still limited at the community level.

This pilot is supported by the 4 Communities by Communities grant, and implemented in collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Health and the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (under the Directorate of Disease Control and Immunization). 🏥

Over the next 3–6 months, we will continue engaging this community through discussions, outreaches, and implementation research principles to inform locally relevant policies.

🤝🤝We are also open to collaboration with organizations, researchers, community mobilizers, and educators working across cancer prevention, HPV and Hepatitis B vaccination, and screening initiatives.
