AKHUE HERITAGE PRESERVATION FOUNDATION
PROFILE & AKHUẸ GAME SEASON 10 REVIVAL EDITION.
ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
Akhue Heritage Preservation Foundation (AHPF) is a registered cultural heritage organization established to preserve, promote, document and revive Akhuẹ, an indigenous traditional game of the Edo state people of Nigeria.
The Foundation was established in response to the gradual decline in awareness and participation in traditional games among younger generations. Its primary objective is to ensure that Akhuẹ is not lost to history, but is preserved, properly documented and transferred from older generations to today's youth and future generations.
The Foundation believes that cultural heritage can become a powerful instrument for youth development, education, entertainment, tourism, community development and economic empowerment when properly organised and promoted.
OUR VISION
To make Akhuẹ a recognized, preserved and continuously practiced Edo state cultural game, connecting generations and contributing to cultural pride, youth development, tourism and community advancement.
OUR MISSION
The Foundation seeks to:
Preserve and promote Akhuẹ as an important Edo cultural heritage.
Document its history, rules, techniques and traditional practices.
Introduce the game to younger generations.
Encourage youth and women's participation.
Promote Akhuẹ through competitions, media and public awareness.
Develop the game as a cultural tourism attraction.
Create economic opportunities around the game.
Build partnerships with government, traditional institutions, corporations, foundations and the media.
WHAT IS AKHUẸ GAME ?
Akhuẹ is a traditional Edo game played with Akhuẹ seeds arranged on a prepared playing surface. It is a game of skill, accuracy, concentration, strategy and control.
The traditional game is played on a smooth surface, with players using an Akhuẹ seed to interact with the arranged seeds according to established traditional methods.
The game is not football and does not depend on goal posts. Its identity is based on the arrangement of the seeds, the playing technique and the strategic skill of the players.
The Foundation's approach is to preserve the traditional character of Akhuẹ game while creating a more organized competition structure that makes the game easier for modern audiences to understand, watch and participate in.
WHY THE REVIVAL MATTERS
Many indigenous games and cultural practices are gradually disappearing because of limited documentation, funding, public awareness and youth participation.
Reviving Akhuẹ therefore goes beyond organizing a sporting event. It is an effort to preserve Edo state identity and indigenous knowledge.
The Foundation sees Akhuẹ game as a platform connecting:
CULTURE • YOUTH • EDUCATION • ENTERTAINMENT • TOURISM • ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY
AKHUẸ AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Akhuẹ encourages concentration, patience, precision, observation, strategic thinking, discipline and competitive spirit.
The Foundation believes that these qualities make the game suitable for youth programmes, schools, communities and cultural development initiatives.
Women and girls are also encouraged to participate as players, officials, organisers, entrepreneurs and cultural ambassadors.
