ENDOMETRIOSIS:
What is it?

Endometriosis is a condition that affects women. Endometriosis happens when tissue that is similar to that of endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus. This tissue-acts like regular uterine tissue does during your period. It will grow, thicken and breakdown but nowhere to go. The body usually expels this type of tissue during menstruation, but the tissue that forms in endometriosis may remain in the body, which may become inflamed or swollen. As the tissue decomposes, and may cause scar formation, irritation, severe pain and disorders of the reproductive tract.
Endometriosis is a chronic condition. Currently, there is no cure for endometriosis, but there are ways to relieve the pain and discomfort. It is important to immediately contact your Doctor, if you have two or more of the symptoms for accurate diagnosis. Your Doctor may use medication, surgery or hormone therapy to manage the effects. The symptoms may improve or go away completely with menopause.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS. Experts believe endometriosis affects around 11% of females in the USA aged 15 - 44 years. It is most common among those in their 30s and 40s. Doctors don't know exactly what causes endometriosis.
Some of the probable causes include:
*Genetic Factors - as it appears to run in families. If your mother, aunt or sister has endometriosis, you're more likely to get it.
*Retrograde menstruation - menstrual blood that contains endometrial cells may pass back through the fallopian tubes, where the cells stick to the organs.
*Menstrual issues including:
- Starting your period at early age, less than 11 years.
- Heavier and longer periods more than 7 days.
- Shorter cycles less than 27 days.
*High levels of the hormone estrogen in the body.
*And alcohol and caffeine consumption.

Endometriosis is the leading cause of infertility. Nearly 2 of every 5 women who can't get pregnant have it.

Risk Factors
Endometriosis is the leading cause of infertility. Nearly 2 of every 5 women who can't get pregnant have it. If endometriosis interferes with your reproductive organs, your ability to get pregnant can become an issue. When endometrial tissue wraps around your ovaries, it can block your eggs from releasing, the tissue can block s***m from making its way up the fallopian tubes or it can stop a fertilized egg from skidding down the tubes to the uterus.
