Mgbakwu Residents Storm Anambra Govt House with Body of Man Allegedly Killed by SASA Operatives

Residents of Mgbakwu community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State on [day not specified] staged a protest at the Government House in Awka, carrying the body of a young man they allege was killed by operatives of the Special Anti-touting Squad (SASA).

The demonstrators, who described the protest as peaceful, are demanding justice for the deceased, identified as Akidi. Community members claim he was shot and killed the previous night in circumstances they describe as unjustified.

According to accounts circulating on social media, including a post by a Facebook user identified as Kasie, the incident has left the victim’s family devastated and sparked outrage within the community. The post alleged that Akidi was not involved in any criminal activity at the time of his death and was with his wife when he was killed.

Kasie wrote that the incident resulted in a sudden and irreversible loss for the family, describing it as an extrajudicial killing and calling for accountability.

Authorities in Anambra State have yet to issue an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the Flashback: Allegations of Excesses Against Anambra Security Operatives Fuel Renewed Anger

The protest by Mgbakwu residents has renewed attention on a series of past allegations against Anambra State security operatives, including UdoGaAchi and related outfits, which have faced repeated accusations of extrajudicial conduct and abuse of power.

In one of the earlier widely reported incidents in Mgbakwu, residents accused operatives of killing a female tailor during an operation, alleging she was struck by a stray bullet. The case triggered public protests and demands for accountability over what locals described as indiscriminate use of force.

Civil society groups have also previously alleged unlawful detentions linked to the outfit, claiming that over 150 persons were held without trial in undisclosed facilities. The claims intensified calls for oversight and legal scrutiny of the group’s operations.

In another reported case, a trader accused operatives of abduction and extortion, alleging he was detained in a forest location and forced to transfer N1.4 million before his release. The matter later drew police attention and further public concern over alleged abuse.

There have also been human rights-related controversies, including the reported assault of a female corps member, which led to the arrest and arraignment of former operatives on charges including intimidation and assault.

These incidents have contributed to recurring public criticism of state-backed security operations in Anambra, with residents and rights advocates repeatedly calling for reform, accountability, or tighter regulation.

The latest incident in Mgbakwu, involving the alleged killing of a young man identified as Akidi, has again triggered protests and renewed calls for justice, as community tensions over security operations continue to escalate.
