CHOLERA OUTBREAK

Cholera is a bacterial infection that can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting.

The symptoms of cholera are:
*Large amounts of diarrhoea (which sometimes looks like rice water)
*Vomiting
*Leg cramps
*Feeling weak.

Severe diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can lead to weakness and even death if not treated rapidly.
Symptoms and signs of dehydration are thirst, weakness or fatigue, sunken eyes and decreased skin elasticity.

Infants, young children, older people and people who are already sick are most at risk of getting severely ill if they get cholera.
The most important things to reduce cholera deaths is for anyone with symptoms to drink oral rehydration solution as soon as they become ill, and to get to a health centre fast.

N/B: Cholera is a fast killer that requires quik/proper attention and treatment.

QUESTION: What should I do if I think I have cholera?

ANSWER: Stay calm. Keep hydrated using "ORS"oral rehydration solution (available from health workers, shops or can be made at home mixing 1 litre water with 6 teaspoons sugar and half a teaspoon of salt) or other fluids (soup, juice, soda, coconut milk etc.). You need to drink enough to replace the fluids you are losing.
Seek medical care. Go to the nearest oral rehydration point, cholera treatment centre or health care facility as fast as possible.

ORS (ORAL REHYDRATION SOLUTION)
This is a mixture of salts, sugars, and drinking water. These solutions contain a precise ratio of glucose and electrolytes to address fluid loss in the human body, in accordance with standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Oral rehydration solutions also contain sodium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and chloride.

QUESTION: How do oral rehydration solutions work?

ANSWER: Drinking an ORS can help to replenish electrolyte imbalance due to mild to moderate dehydration.

An ORS is more effective than drinking water because plain water doesn’t contain many electrolytes..

CONTENTS OF ORS
Sodium: One of the main electrolytes in fluid, sodium helps to absorb nutrients and plays a role in muscle contractions and cognitive function. It’s typically in ORS in the form of sodium chloride.

Glucose: A key agent in ORS, this ingredient helps the body absorb sodium through the cotransport system. It also helps to energize muscles and remedy fatigue.

Other electrolytes: Nutrients like potassium, zinc, and magnesium play a crucial role in fluid balance. Potassium helps to regulate fluid balance and also plays a role in contracting muscles. Zinc and magnesium both work to support immune health to help fight illness-caused diarrhoea.

FOOD ALLERGY

ALLERGY is a condition in which the immune system reacts abnormally to a foreign substance.

FOOD ALLERGY is an unpleasant or dangerous immune system reaction after a certain food is eaten.

For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not severe. For other people, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life-threatening. Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to two hours after eating the offending food. Rarely, symptoms may be delayed for several hours.

CAUSES
When you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a substance in food as something harmful. In response, your immune system triggers cells to release an antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) to neutralize the allergy-causing food or food substance, called an allergen.
The next time you eat even the smallest amount of that food, IgE antibodies sense it. They then signal your immune system to release a chemical called histamine, as well as other chemicals, into your bloodstream. These chemicals cause allergy symptoms.

Most food allergies are triggered by certain proteins in:
*Crustacean shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and crab.
*Peanuts.
*Tree nuts, such as walnuts and pecans.
*Fish.
*Chicken eggs.
*Cow's milk.
*Wheat.
*Soy.

SYMPTOMS
The most common food allergy symptoms include:
*Tingling or itching in the mouth.
*Hives, itching or eczema.
*Swelling of the lips, face, tongue, and throat or other parts of the body.
*Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing.
*Belly pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.
*Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting.

N/B: ALLERGY CAN BE LIFE THREATENING SO IT SHOULD BE CAUTIOUSLY TAKEN CARE OF😣

Many mistake food intolerance to be food allergy whereas they are two different things.

Food intolerance occurs when the body has a chemical reaction to eating a particular food or drink.
The symptoms for mild to moderate food allergy or intolerance may sometimes be similar, but food intolerance does not involve the immune system and does not cause severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).

You can live a healthy life with a food allergy. If you have a food allergy, you need to carefully avoid all foods and ingredients that cause allergic reactions.
You may also need to take a nutritional supplement to replace any nutrients lost by avoiding your trigger foods. Speak with your healthcare provider or dietitian before starting a new eating plan.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF TIGERNUT SEEDS

Nuts and seeds are good sources of protein, healthy fats, fibres, vitamins and minerals.

1) Promote digestion: Tiger nuts are high in dietary fiber with about 10grams per serving. Fiber benefits the body by aiding digestion and preventing constipation. Fiber adds bulk to stool and facilitates the easy passage of food that has been digested in the stomach.

2) Aids weight loss: Fiber helps keep someone fuller for longer and reduce hunger cravings, which can help decrease the overall calorie intake and support healthy weight maintenance.

3) Lowers blood sugar levels: The higher insoluble dietary fiber content of tiger nuts helps regulate blood sugar levels because fiber slows down sugar absorption in the gut, eating high fiber foods like tiger nuts do not cause sudden blood sugar spikes.

4) Supports heart health: Tiger nuts are rich in nutrients that help with lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, particularly the levels of low-density lipoprotein (bad) cholesterol, this is due to their healthy fat content such as monounsaturated fatty acids which help improve the heart and blood vessel health and can lower the risk of blood clot formation, hypertension and heart disease.

5) Strengthens immunity: Tiger nut extracts have been shown to benefit the immune system. The extracts were found to be effective against bacteria such as staphylococcus, salmonella and E.coli.

6) Improves sexual drive: Tiger nuts have been used to improve libido and sexual dysfunction in Ayurvedic medicine. They help improve blood flow to the ge****ls, which can be beneficial for treating erectile dysfunction.

7) Source of plant protein: Tiger nuts particularly the brown type are an excellent source of plant based protein. Protein plays a crucial role in the synthesis of vitamins, enzymes and hormones needed to build and maintain bones, cartilage, muscle, blood.

8) It protects against aging: Tiger nuts are rich source of antioxidants that can prevent or slow damage to cell caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that the body produces as a reaction to environment and other pressure.

COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING

Around the age of 6months, an infant's need for energy and nutrients starts to exceed what is provided by breastmilk, and complementary foods are necessary to meet those needs. An infant of this age is also developmentally ready for other foods. This transition is referred to as complementary feeding.

Complementary feeding means introduction of family foods plus breast milk. The child receives both breast milk and solid (semi-solid or soft) foods.

WHO recommends that infants start receiving complementary foods at 6months of age in addition to breast milk.

Initially they should receive complementary foods 2-3 times a day between 6-8 months and increase to 3-4 times daily between 9-11 months and 12-24 months.
Additional nutritious snacks (e.g fresh fruits and vegetables) should also be offered 1-2 times per day for ages 12-24 months, as desired.

Gradually increase food consistency and variety as the infant gets older, adapting to the infant's requirements and abilities.
Infants can eat pureed, mashed and semi-solid foods beginning at 6 months.

By 12 months, most children can eat the same types of foods as consumed by the rest of the family, while keeping in mind the need for nutrient-dense foods including animalresources foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products.

Avoid foods in a form that may cause choking, such as whole grapes or raw carrots. Avoid giving drinks with low nutrient value such as tea, coffee and sugary soft drinks.

Ensuring that infants nutritional needs are met requires that complementary foods be:
1) Timely: Meaning that they are introduced when the need for energy and nutrients exceeds what can be provided through exclusive breastfeeding.

2) Adequate: Meaning that they provide sufficient energy, protein and micronutrients to meet a growing child's nutritional needs.

3) Safe: Meaning that they are hygienically stored and prepared, and fed with clean hands using clean utensils and not bottles.

4) Properly fed: Meaning that they are given consistent with a child's signals of appetite and satiety and that meal frequency and feeding are suitable for age.

N/B: Delaying the introduction of complementary foods could result in nutritional deficiencies or developmental delays. It can also be difficult for infants to accept different foods and textures, leading them to become selective in their diet.

I will be sharing some complementary foods in my next post, stay tuned🌹
