The Final Stretch: HDA Kids Tech Bootcamp's Fifth and Final Week🏆🏅

Week Five arrived carrying a different weight than the ones before it. This was the last week of the program and everyone in the room seemed to know it.

Monday: Back to the Projects
There were no more classes or revisions this week. Instead, the children signed in and headed straight to their groups to continue the projects they'd been assigned back in Week Four. Their instructors opened the day with words of encouragement, reminding them what they'd been building towards - young tech stars daring to dream & build.

The week ushered in something new: Collaborations.

Participants were encouraged to ask each other questions, share ideas, and lean on one another.

Instructors went a step further, pairing each group with more experienced Kids Tech students, ones who had earlier gone through the program, to help answer questions, guiding them along the way.

We saw the shy become bold, the unguided become purposeful and above all, the legacy of our fallen heroes being honored🏆

To the Heroes Dreams Alive Foundation’s community, donors, sponsors, partners, volunteers, our wards, we say thank you for joining us in this vision ❤️

Week 4 at our recently concluded Kids Tech Bootcamp, Kwara State Edition 💙

It started with business as usual — classes, assignments, revisions 💻

And then, Wednesday was "The Day" 😅 — An assessment day to examine how much the children actually learned.

The beauty of these assessments were that the children got their results instantly, nerves were real and shaking.

Between the electives of Web Development and Python Coding classes, the Python students showed serious strength 🔥

On Friday came the pen-ultimate challenge: Mock Project Presentation Assignments!

The Web Development (Frontend) & Python teams were given project assignments that cut across building school portals, finance systems, quizzes & games.

Can't wait to see what they build? Stay tuned with us for week 5 updates 👀

Not every lesson at the Kids Tech Bootcamp happened behind a computer. ♟️💻

As the week drew to a close, our facilitating partner, KidsTech Africa, introduced the children to something different: the world of chess.

The children were introduced to the basics of the Chess. What it is, how the board is arranged, and the different pieces on the board and what each one represents.

For many of them, it was a first glimpse into a game that demands strategy, patience, observation and thoughtful decision-making.

And perhaps that’s what made the session special.

Because learning isn’t always about mastering something in one sitting. Sometimes, it is simply about being introduced to something new, becoming curious, and discovering possibilities beyond what you already know.

At the HDA Kids Tech Bootcamp, we are creating room for the children to learn technology, explore new interests and develop the confidence to engage with the world around them.

One lesson, one experience and one new possibility at a time. ❤️

As Week 2 of the HDA Kids Tech Bootcamp 2026 continued, an unexpected conversation came up.

Femi, the older sibling of one of our participants and a 300-level Computer Science student, approached us for help securing an internship.

Inspired by his determination to use his holiday break productively towards building his career. We naturally took up his case because this is exactly what we are here for — in Osita Iheme’s voice 😄

We shared Femi’s story and aspirations with the co-founder of Digprom (a sister company to KidsTech Africa that provides advanced technology education for individuals building careers in tech.) who directed he made a formal application.

We reviewed his CV, guiding him on how to structure one properly and how to write a compelling cover letter.

Our goal was not only to help him secure an opportunity, but also to equip him with the confidence and skills to pursue future opportunities independently.

Digprom believed in his potential and graciously offered him an internship with the organisation. Even better, Femi would also join their ongoing tech training cohort until he returned to school.

The good news doesn’t stop there.

JustusedTech also committed to providing laptops for Femi and another Computer Science student under our care, supporting their education and career development in the technology space.

It was a day filled with extra joy for us❤️

At HDA Foundation, we are committed to mentoring, empowering and equipping children of fallen heroes to become confident, productive and independent young people. Bridging in whatever way we can, some of the gaps left behind when their parents made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Femi’s story reminded us that empowerment can begin with something as simple as recognising someone’s potential and helping them take the next step.

Help us create more stories like Femi’s. Support, share, or partner with HDA Foundation today.

From Code to Stories

Week Two showed both sides of what HDA offers — the discipline of learning a new (tech) skills, and the encouragement to finding their own voice. Two very different kinds of building, happening in the same week, for our heroes’ children.

Monday & Wednesday were all about tech — the participants drove deeper into Web Development & Python coding respectively, building real skills line by line 💻🔥

Friday brought "My Story, My Voice" — this is where our partner, Literacy Advocacy Network (BLAN) used storytelling with prompts like "the day I discovered a mysterious box" and "if I could have one superpower” to guide the children to encourage expressing themselves confidently.

The children used their imaginations quite interestingly, from finding in their imaginary mysterious boxes, gold, calabashes, grandma's laundry, and even a wish to meet the President all made an amusing appearance 😄📖

During the session with BLAN, some of the personal stories shared by the participants carried more weight than others, and the convener, Mrs Rafat made sure every child felt heard and guided.

The day ended with further reflections — the participants made gratitude lists, dreams for the future, and letters to HDA itself, many carrying the same quiet hope: that HDA’s work continues.

In essence, Codes during the week, imaginations and reflections by Friday — that's HDA Foundation 🙌

Building a community, there are times we have to turn inwards, making the most of what we have.

Despite not having professional therapists on site, our wonderful volunteers ably convened their assigned groups during the therapy sessions.

The volunteers at this year’s KTB were resourceful in putting together thoughtful questions & affirmations in order to achieving the goal of the group therapy sessions.

This is what community is all about, human compassion, solidarity and being present for one another.

Friday: A Twist to the Tech Sessions

To close out the week, the summer tech training gave way to something more personal afterwards — Group Therapy.

While the central objective of this year’s Kids Tech Bootcamp is to empower and broaden the horizon of the participants - providing them the tools to create possibilities. We intentionally etched into the program, group therapy sessions because sometimes, what a child who just lost a parent really needs is as simple as a, “How are you?” “How do you feel about this loss?”

On this first Friday, notwithstanding not having professional therapists to handle these sessions owing to a slim budget, we made do with what we had, ourselves. Volunteers and the program director sat with the children, holding close circle therapy sessions in three (3) groups.

The sessions started with simple questions to encourage the children to feel free expressing themselves, soon after deep emotional questions about their new realities as children of fallen heroes were asked.

We recall one of the children, Murtala, who recounted the pain of recently loosing his military parent in action just last year, 2025 and the vacuum it left in the home and to his esteem amongst others stories. However emotional it was, the beauty of getting the children to express themselves was how everyone afterwards left lighter and feeling seen.

The group therapy sessions were closed with affirmations because life isn’t about what you’re handed but about what you believe it to be.

From our founder's story of loss, privilege and creating possibilities, to a room full of other children like her, signing up for their first summer tech classes, to a Friday that let them speak their hearts and be heard — that was Week One at Heroes Dreams Alive Foundation.

An NGO isn't just built on paperwork and structure; it's built on community - real life moments of humanity, compassion and solidarity like these.

Day 2 - Getting to Work

By Wednesday, the rhythm of the program had begun to take shape.

The children arrived at the event centre, signed in, and settled into their respective classes — Web Development or Python Coding. With their instructors guiding them through each lesson, they listened attentively, participated in practical exercises, and submitted their first assignments.

Mondays and Wednesdays form the backbone of the program — the days dedicated to real, hands-on technical training.

But at HDA Foundation, we believe that empowering children goes beyond equipping them with technical skills. It also means helping them develop the confidence and emotional strength to navigate life.

After the day’s lessons, our Founder had a brief conversation with the children about the importance of self-esteem and confidence.

Children who experience the loss of a parent can become more vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation, particularly when they lack the confidence to recognise unhealthy situations, establish boundaries, or speak up for themselves. Helping them understand their worth and build healthy self-esteem is therefore an important first step towards strengthening their ability to protect themselves.

To make the session more interactive and engaging, the Founder invited some of the children to participate in a short role-play demonstrating the importance of self-esteem and confidence. The children thoroughly enjoyed the activity, while also demonstrating a clear understanding of the message behind it.

It was another reminder that true empowerment is not only about what a child can learn, but also about how confidently they can stand, speak, and navigate the world with what they have learned.
