What if the person you think is in control… is actually the one being controlled?

What if some of the things we call love, marriage, responsibility, sacrifice and even β€œdoing the right thing” deserve to be questioned?

And the question at the centre of it all:

For our October Book Review, Asaba Literacy & Reading Club is taking on Esther Vilar’s controversial classic, THE MANIPULATED MAN.

Today, we celebrate Nigeria - her journey, her resilience, her people, and the possibilities that lie ahead.

As we welcome October, we are reminded that the strength of a nation is not measured only by its natural resources or physical development, but by the knowledge, character and potential of its people.

And that is why literacy matters.

A people who read are better equipped to learn.
A people who learn are better prepared to lead.
And a people empowered with knowledge can build stronger families, stronger communities and, ultimately, a stronger nation.

At READ, PAINT & SIP, Dr. Mrs. Miminim Oseji - a member of the Asaba Literacy & Reading Club and Head of Service, Delta State - brought something deeply personal to the canvas.

She chose a book she had written herself.

A work connected to her experience, her ideas and her interest in helping students make the most of their educational journey abroad.

And there she was, years later, not simply as its author, but as a reader - reflecting on the work, explaining what it meant to her, and interpreting it through paint.

That moment captures something we value deeply at Asaba Literacy & Reading Club.

Books are not just objects we read and put away.

At READ, PAINT & SIP, we asked a simple question:

What stayed with you after you read?

For Barrister A. P. Maduemezia, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Asaba Branch, the answer found its way onto a canvas.

In this moment, he takes us through his painting β€” explaining what he saw, what resonated with him, and the meaning behind what he created.

And that is what made this experience so special.

We did not all read the same book in the same way.

We did not all see the same thing.

And we certainly did not all express what we felt in the same way.

A book became an idea.
An idea became an interpretation.
An interpretation became a painting.

OURS ARE SOMETIMES PAINTED. 🎨

READ, PAINT & SIP was a different kind of book review - participants took the books that moved them and translated what resonated into colour, images and stories on canvas.

As far as our Club's experience goes, we've never had anything quite like it in Asaba.

But the canvas was only part of the experience.

There was the conversation.
The laughter.
The ideas.
The creativity.
The connections.
And, most importantly, the people.

This is what happens when readers, intellectuals, professionals and curious minds come together around books.

That is Asaba Literacy & Reading Club.

We don't just gather to read.

πŸ“šπŸŽ¨ WE DIDN’T JUST REVIEW BOOKS. WE BROUGHT THEM TO LIFE.

Yesterday, Asaba Literacy & Reading Club hosted READ, PAINT & SIP - and what an unforgettable experience it was!

Members and guests came with books that had shaped their thoughts, stirred their emotions, or left a lasting impression. But instead of reviewing those books in the usual way, they translated what resonated with them into colour, form, and art on canvas. πŸŽ¨πŸ“š

It was a beautiful meeting of literature, creativity, conversation, and community.

We were honoured to welcome the Dr. Mininim Oseji- Head of Service, Delta State, who shared her book through this unique creative experience, as well as A. P. Mademeze, Esq., Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Asaba Branch.

We were also delighted to have wonderful faces from different professional and intellectual backgrounds join us to read, reflect, create, connect, and have a genuinely memorable time.

From the thoughtful book interpretations to the conversations, laughter, paintings, and new connections, READ, PAINT & SIP reminded us that books do more than tell stories.

They give us something to think about, feel, question, imagine - and sometimes, paint.

To everyone who attended, supported, participated, or helped make the experience possible: thank you for making it special. ❀️

This was more than a book review.
