Express Radio Hosts Stakeholders to Wrap Up World Hypertension Day 2026 Commemoration in Kano
On Tuesday, 19th May 2026, Express Radio 90.3FM hosted the In-Country Coordinator of Global Health Advocacy Incubator, Hamza Hassan Abdullahi, alongside the Executive Director of GAMMUN Centre for Care and Development Nigeria and Project Lead of the Kano Hypertension Advocacy Initiative (KHAI), Tulari Tine, on a special radio programme organized to wrap up activities marking the 2026 World Hypertension Day commemoration.
During the discussion, the guests highlighted the significance of May 17, globally recognized as World Hypertension Day, noting that the day serves as a platform to raise awareness on the dangers of high blood pressure, encourage regular blood pressure checks, and promote healthy lifestyles aimed at reducing the burden of hypertension and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). They explained that hypertension remains a silent killer affecting millions of people due to poor awareness, late diagnosis, and limited access to quality healthcare services.
The stakeholders also outlined major activities carried out under the 2026 commemoration in Kano State through the Kano Hypertension Advocacy Initiative (KHAI). According to them, the activities included advocacy engagements, medical outreach programmes, public sensitization campaigns, media engagements, and capacity-building sessions for hypertension focal persons across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state. They emphasized the need for sustained collaboration between government institutions, development partners, healthcare professionals, civil society organizations, and the media in addressing the growing burden of hypertension in Nigeria.
Speaking during the programme, the guests urged residents to adopt healthy lifestyles through regular exercise, healthy eating habits, reduced salt intake, avoidance of to***co use, and routine blood pressure monitoring. They further reaffirmed the commitment of GHAI and GCCDN towards supporting policies, advocacy initiatives, and community-based interventions that will strengthen hypertension prevention, early detection, and treatment across Kano State
