The Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Faculty of Law in talks with Nigeria’s Shippers Council to Advance Maritime Capacity Building
The Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in collaboration with the Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS), is in discussion to deepen engagement with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) to strengthen capacity building and policy development in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
This commitment was underscored during a recent courtesy visit by a UNILAG delegation to the headquarters of the NSC in Lagos. The delegation was led by Prof. Wale Olawoyin, SAN, Head of the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, representatives of the Institute of Maritime Studies, Dr. Simon Akaayar and Dr. Ihuoma Ilobinso, both of the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law.
Prof. Olawoyin highlighted the University's longstanding interest in contributing to national development through strategic academic-industry partnerships.
Receiving the delegation, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the NSC, Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, welcomed the proposed collaboration as timely and essential to the Council’s human capital development agenda. He expressed confidence that UNILAG’s academic expertise will help to equip the Council’s workforce with practical, policy-relevant training needed to meet evolving industry challenges.
Prof. Olawoyin commended the NSC's leadership for prioritizing knowledge partnerships and emphasized that the Department is committed to playing a pivotal role in shaping maritime law and policy in Nigeria. “Our collaboration with the Council is an opportunity to bridge theory and practice, and to jointly develop training and research initiatives that can support Nigeria’s blue economy aspirations,” he noted.
