EtΓ‘ is the traditional wrestling festival of the Ekpeye people, a centuries-old cultural practice that continues to thrive across many communities today.
More than a sport, EtΓ‘ has historically served as a symbol of strength, courage, discipline, and honor. In earlier times, wrestling contests provided a platform for young men to demonstrate their physical prowess, earning respect within the community and, in some cases, influencing the selection of warriors, leaders, and husbands.

According to oral tradition, the wrestling arena was a place where reputations were built and champions were celebrated. The most skilled wrestlers became symbols of community pride, admired for their bravery, resilience, and determination.

Held annually during the rainy season, between June and September, EtΓ‘ brings together families, friends, and neighboring communities in a vibrant display of culture and tradition. The event is marked by music, dancing, storytelling, and spirited wrestling matches that draw enthusiastic crowds to the village square.
Today, EtΓ‘ remains an important expression of Ekpeye identity and cultural heritage.

Beyond competition, it strengthens social bonds, promotes unity, and provides an opportunity for younger generations to connect with the traditions of their ancestors.
